Steelers and it isn't close IMO...they are like the fricking plague...go into any fricking airport in the country on a sunday during football season and there will be 15-20 steelers fans watching in a restaurant or bar. Go to any neutral sportsbar in city without pro football and Steelers will be the largest fanbase in the plac

Who cares? And the reason so many bears fans were at the game is there are so many people from the Midwest who live in DFW. I would say over half the people I meet here are from the Midwest.

I'd agree the Steelers followed by the Packers.

Patriots, Packers, Giants, Steelers, Cowboys. In that order.

Pats are the most recognizable and the most you hate them or you love them.
The Packers are probably the most unhated team in football (unless your team is in the NFC North).
The Giants are the better team in NYC, and have jumped up because of the number of times they've beaten the dreaded Pats in the Super Bowl.
The Steelers were the one team historically in the AFC(Prior to the Pats) you had to beat if you wanted to play in the Super Bowl. They're history alone puts them on this list.
The Cowboys were America's Team because they were the top banana of the NFC division that contained >50% of football's press coverage.

These are the clear Top 5 runners for "America's Team". Nobody else even comes close.

Steelers fan are the most visible, but a whole lot of people hate them as well.

IMO it is the Packers b/c they are very popular and don't have as many haters as other popular teams like the Steelers, Cowboys, Patriots, etc.

The Cowboys are America's Team forever.

As Bob Ryan, vice president and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, pointed out, a nickname is non-transferable. It's like an airline ticket. It can be momentarily misplaced, even stuffed into a drawer beneath a pile of socks, but it can't be used by anybody else.

"There's never going to be another Galloping Ghost, or another defensive line that's the Purple People Eaters," Ryan said, without having to add that there will never be another America's Team. "You can't transfer a nickname. It can't happen."

not until the 70's they were god awful and had no fan base to speak of

lots of historic teams that have won did it dating back to the 30's and 40's. The steelers did their thing in the 70's and didn't really become relevant again until Big Ben outside that lose to dallas in the 90's

The Steelers have only had six losing seasons since 1971 and have appeared in multiple AFC Championships and Super Bowls and been a fixture in the playoffs during that same time. The Steelers have never had a long period of being bad my whole life of watching football.
