'm talking programs that could become legit NC contenders most years. All it would take is the right coach to see the potential and take advantage of it like Saban to LSU or Spurrier to Florida.

I can see them being great even if Texas is also especially being in different conferences.

Yeah the different conferences thing is key. Not really a zero sum game anymore.

But we've been a sleeping giant for as long as I can remember. Not sure if we'll ever wake up, tbh

NC State. They seem to care about football more than UNC.

And while Texas is in the dumps, A&M 's potential is through the roof. But they're not being handled much better than the horns. Too much politics in play in Texas. Both schools need a HC that will take charge and not get pushed around by boosters. Like Louisiana on steroids. Somebody with saban's no nonsense attitude would kick arse at Texas or A&M, but anything less gets bullied by the boosters.

-Ole Miss- would hate this one also but I see the potential.

What potential? You mean the cheating that will bring them down?

UCLA should be better than what they have been. They wasted the USC scholarship years.

Nebraska maybe? Notre Dame, kinda? Texas, for sure.

Another question:

But what Programs could be great that nobody ever mentions? A program that has never been very successful but has the resources to become a big time power.

Minnesota maybe? South Carolina?

Somewhat agree, but UVA still gets its fair share of talent. They should be better than they are.

I'll throw one out there: Cal. They should be a powerhouse in both football and basketball, but they're one of the worst-run athletic programs in college sports.

They don't have the compunctions about taking academically risky kids, either; they're more Michigan or UNC than they are UVA in that sense. That program has every conceivable advantage you could ever want, but they just suck at running competent football and basketball programs.

TEXAS

(Hopefully) a great, innovative coach. Outside of Oklahoma, we have a favorable schedule. We really have no excuse for not to winning 10+ games every year.

Yea I don't see much potential for ole miss without cheating. It's a talent rich state but they get cherry picked by the big boys and have to split the leftovers with msu. Neither school is enough of a draw to lock up the state without cheating.

I agree. A&M has it there for the taking and they arent capitalizing on it yet. Sumlin can't get them over the hump.

If the get significant penalties like USC did or worse it will take every bit of 5 years for then to come back. Couple that with them not being a historic program like a USC and I don't see them being what they have been for some time.

As far as programs that have never done it, South Carolina. They were neck and neck with Clemson only a few years ago. (Clemson was a major sleeping giant as well) lots of talent in state so if one of those schools pulls away from the other, plenty of potential as we see now with Clemson.

Also agree with Cal.

I don't think Ole Miss would ever make the jump but I'm just trying to so who has the best chance. I maybe should have put Arkansas over them. But it's not impossible for Ole Miss. They have a little bit if history and if they could sharpen up their cheating skills then it could happen.

To be fair to Minnesota, they were a national powerhouse for quite a long time, though they haven't been there in about fifty years.

They probably have too many fundamental limitations at this point to be anything notable. They're a damn site far away from the nearest recruiting territory of note (Chicagoland area - unlike Wisconsin which is just a few hours away and a big draw for Chicago kids as is), and they don't have any real pull.

The Indiana schools (IU and Purdue) should probably be better than they are. Indiana is actually a decent high school football state, and they're right next door to a great high school football recruiting area (Ohio) and two pretty damn good recruiting areas (Chicagoland and Michigan). They should be decently solid programs.

I guess if ole miss gets sanctioned back to the dark ages, miss state could become a power by locking up the state. I still think theres too much competition in the west and always will be. The systems set up for a handful of sec teams to succeed and the miss schools aren't in that number. It'd take a great recruiter to take them to the top.
