Houston could be if they could get in a better conference. Not familiar with their facilities so that could rule them out.

UGA is the sleepiant giant. They are so close to being so good it is almost a joke at this point. How they haven't won anything in 40 years is an interesting question

Well I'm looking for schools that haven't been very good that could turn things around in a big way with the right coach. What makes those choices funny?

UCLA has had its moments but its a basketball school above everything else

You can tell a lot about programs from their bookstores and apparel sales. UCLA is all basketball geared sales.

I'm sure Bama sells nothing but football jerseys. Duke nothing but basketball jerseys. Cal nothing but water polo jerse...eh, speedos. And Rugby shirts.

It's clear UCLA cares about being a well-rounded successful University and the most successful sports program in the nation...hell, they've won more NCAA titles than anyone else in history. They put money into their sports program to dominate across the board. And they do.

But it's also clear that they sort view football like their other minor sports - but basketball is their legacy and they know it and hope for that success over football. And they revel in trying to win everything else besides football.

I thought about the Arizona schools but I don't think they have the high school talent in that area.

arizona generally has three or four big time players. like top 200 nationally guys with a five star to top them off. they just usually go to USC or UCLA

NC State. They seem to care about football more than UNC.

Yea, its a way better cultural fit for college football than UNC. Everything just hasnt come together unfortunately. Cant seem to get the magic combo of a good AD + a good head coach + a few stud players at the same time to tip it in the right direction. Maybe after Yow is gone.

The Rose Bowl is a blessing and a curse for UCLA. Tough to build a top flight program when your stadium is an hour away

I also remember reading an article about Mora trying to get additional money for his staff because everyone lives an hour away from Westwood because of housing costs

and we are just now moving forward on a new practice facility. it just is what it is

it sucks because who knows how different things could be if injuries didnt derail 2015. but oh well. at least basketball is finally on its way back

i dont get why people are acting like UT is a sleeping giant

theyve had 3 rough seasons, so the frick what. they ARE a giant

I tend to agree. They've obviously been down, but they also played for a national championship less than a decade ago.

If someone wants to argue they should have won more NCs since DKR, that's one thing. But it's not like they've suffered for any extended period. Texas is more like the alcoholic giant that falls off the wagon every few years.

I think A&M and UGA are more like sleeping giants when considering their resources, tradition and lack of hardware over the decades.

All it would take is the right coach to see the potential and take advantage of it like Saban to LSU or Spurrier to Florida.

you are missing important pieces

selection evaluation and training
recruiting,
X's and O's
and execution by everyone.

Maryland is located close enough to DC and Baltimore to hit the jackpot and then maintain. Right coach, and the best players decide to try it. sure.
being close to the resources really helps. recruiting nationally requires religion in common or a really high end educnation.

It's a talent rich state but they get cherry picked by the big boys and have to split the leftovers with msu

There is some talent but most players are very raw talent wise compared to states with better high school football coaching so it may take longer for them to develop.

It's a common misconception that other schools poach big time MS recruits. The top 10 MS recruits for the last five years have mostly gone to state or ole miss. Mississippi kids like to stay in state more than you think.

SC can only sign 25 players each year, there's plenty of talent available for both teams. Mora's a good recruiter, and usually puts together a solid defense. He needs to get that offense straightened out thou, particularly the Oline.

My other choice is easily Maryland.

Maryland's a good choice. They could easily become the east coast version of Oregon (just substitute UA for Nike).

The Indiana schools (IU and Purdue) should probably be better than they are. Indiana is actually a decent high school football state, and they're right next door to a great high school football recruiting area (Ohio) and two pretty damn good recruiting areas (Chicagoland and Michigan). They should be decently solid programs.

When did tOSU and Notre Dame go belly up?
