I can't think of anything wrong with the NFL's. You come away feeling like the games actually mean something.

Except for an 8-8 or 7-9 division champion hosting a 10-6 wild card team, I'd mostly agree with you.

I don't really care for the idea of expanding the NFL playoffs, Imjust think it's rare for a deserving team to be left out.

MLB would be the answer except for one problem... they change the number of games played in a week for the postseason compared to the regular season. This means a staff with two outstanding pitchers (or even one capable of pitching three times in a seven game series) has a much more profound advantage in the postseason than they do in the regular season.

For that reason I think the NHL and NBA have better playoff systems even though they both allow too many low seeds to make the playoffs. The NFL's one and done format (with too many playoff teams) combined with the enforced parity in the league has obviously been a mixed blessing. It allows most teams to be competitive and makes for an exciting system but results in a lot of upset wins by lower seeds who really shouldn't be in contention for the championship after the regular season.

College football actually might end up with a better playoff system than the NFL if their playoff amounts to a tournament of champions from the different conferences. There's a logic in that system and the absence of wildcards would be more likely to enhance the regular season than the NFL's system has shown to.

The NBA.
College football (or more specifically, FBS football) doesn't have one, regardless of what they call it now.

Don't they also give out a regular season trophy though? That's lame.

1. NFL: Each game is important, there are not a ton of undeserving teams in the playoffs, and the best teams from the regular season are rewarded with a bye.

2. MLB: I like the lower number of teams in the playoffs, it keeps the regular season important.

3. NBA: Too watered down b/c pretty often there are bad teams in the playoffs, which devalues the regular season. Also the playoffs are too long with too many long series.

4. College football is the worst b/c of the well documented problems with leaving out deserving teams. I think the new system will be an improvement, just not sure how much of one.

The final is at a neutral site.

Like when Bayern hosted the final against Chelsea?

And yes, I know they lost. But doing the entire QF and SF as aggregate and then doing a one off final is stupid.

The President's Trophy isn't what any of the players play for. Regular season is only important for playoff seeding.

It's all about the Stanley Cup

Completely agree. When we are fortunate enough to get an OT game 7, it is intense. Not a big hockey fan, but a true sudden dealth OT is great. Unlike any other major sport

can't say...

quote:

Can't go with NBA when their playoff system results in 45 win teams being in the lottery and 34 win teams picking after them.

then...

quote:

I'll go with NFL. Only have 16 chances to earn your way in to a one n done so don't F up.

when you can have an 11 win team going to a 7 win team in the wild card game

still mad about the end of the 2010 Saints season

The West has been dominating the East in the NBA win/loss standings for the past decade. The NFL doesn't consistently have 11 win teams missing the playoffs.

FACT...I am sure there are MORE people that watch NHL playoff hockey than NBA playoffs compared to the reg season #'s,,,,,,,

as long as they both aren't from the same divison. If they are the 2nd best team not only doesn't get a bye, but has to go on the road
