Puck Drunk Love has an article on whether the Winter Classic has lost its luster. (LINK ) I don't agree with all of it, but it's a good read.

However, I will agree THIS Winter Classic has lost its luster. It's been mismanaged from the beginning. This is in the article, but here are the major points I agree with on THIS WC being a problem:

1) The venue. DC partisans opposed a Camden Yards WC, but they look more and more like they were dead wrong. Fed Ex Field was a non-starter, as was Byrd (U of M), and the decrepid RFK, so they settled on the personality-free Nats Stadium. That's not a killer in and of itself, but the Lerners, who own the stadium, killed just about all of the ancillary events that go along with the WC, like the Alumni Game. Camden Yards should've been the venue.

2) The matchup. Caps and Hawks? There's simply no bad blood there. It needs to be a rivalry. Now, I would've preferred the Rangers or Flyers, but why not a southern team who likely will never host? The Bolts would've been a great choice, plus... Stamkos. If you have to keep it in the division, at least go with the Canes, who the Caps sort of hate.

3) EPIX. Moving from HBO to EPIX is a bad idea. The NHL needed the advertising. I don't know why the deal fell apart, but they need to get back on HBO for the Road to the WC series.

Anyway, I think the WC is a great game and I love it, but I'm a Caps fan and this WC falls flat. I can only imagine what it is like for neutrals.

Agree, I would prefer it be on HBO because that is a much bigger name brand, however I feel that the production of the show hasn't dropped one bit.

BTW, Trotz is a hell of a man, biased or not.

Yeah, I love the focus on his son. I did not know he had a child with Downs.

Quennville can curse at a near poetic level.

Caps Canes would have drawn in 3 viewers.

Can't wait for CBJ/Pens in the Shoe. It will happen some day

Jackets beating the piss out of Boston.

Got so bad they had to pull Svenburg and put Rask in on his night off

ETA: on cue they go up 6-2. Rask has given up 3 goals in relief

Barry Trotz has more wins over the Pens as the Caps coach than Adam Oates. This was his first game against the Pens, BTW.

The hockey media will never call him out on it, but Crosby completely shite the bed in this game. His "defense" against MoJo allowed him to go end to end and score the big second goal. He also should have been called for a penalty for throwing his stick after he broke it on the slap shot attempt. One day, he won't act like a petulant child, but today ain't that day. Meanwhile, Ovi dominated the game without scoring a goal. He was everywhere, leading the game in shots and hits.

Still, didn't pick up any ground. Rangers won their 8th straight tonight. Damn you, Rags. Y'all are nuclear hot.

For those who haven't seen the Nyquist goal, he held the puck against an NHL team by himself for 28 seconds. That's insane.

The rags are hot and somehow I feel unconfident about the chances of playoff survival. At least Nash is living up to his contract - and apparently Stepan is coming back into form

Preds beat the flyers - great night y'all

In response to Baloo's message...

We are the Washington Caps...screw going to Baltimore because of Camden Yards..

Nationals Park is a nice park and convenient on the Metro line.

But more importantly...how about the wall that Holtby put up last night, plus the hits being delivered by both teams..

and loved the OV we saw last night

Dallas / Rags tonight. Both teams are pretty hot with Dallas winning 12 of the last 16, and the Rangers winning 8 of the last 8. Nothing comes easy for the rangers.

Preds also play Chicago for the top spot in the division.

Washington - Islanders would be a sick game to watch - don't know why that's on MSG2 in the NY Area, will be a better game than NY Rangers / Dallas.

Colorado beat reporter tweeted that Ryan O'Reilly is on the block, if teams are willing to part with a defenseman. The Caps aren't listed as a trade partner, but how about this deal:

ROR for Green and Brouwer.

Green's on the last year of his deal, so you have to sweeten the pot. This gives the Caps some cap relief and a top 2 center. This gives the Avs a consistent 20 G scoring gritty wing plus one of the best offensive blueliners in the NHL, if only for half a year, but you get the first shot at re-signing him before he hits free agency.

Or, ya know, they can have Orpik.

Habs go to Carolina tonight. This IIHF tourney is making it a long trip. But the NHL isn't making them back to backs at least.

Next year the Juniors finals will be at the Bell Centre

I think that Toronto and Hamilton should have been host this year not Montreal.

Why Hamilton? Place is a shithole. Make the Loafs play a long road schedule.

Carolina should be easy for the Habs. Is Semin back yet?
