The best ever was Secretariat vs. Sham. In any other year Sham would likely have gone into the Belmont as a truly great winner of the first two legs and likely winner of the Triple Crown. But Secretariat was truly a very, very, VERY special horse.
Steve Coburn showed he has no class. I understand his plight, but think about races like in the Olympics. You think Michael Phelps complained when he raced against others who hadn't aleady raced in a half dozen events? Hell....No! Too much class for that. Coburn? No class.

Who remembers when ABC tried to make a trile crown winner every year? They would have the series where winner got a mill bonus and if someone won the crown they got 5 mill bonus. Only rule was had to run all three to win the bonus. People were skipping races back in the 80's, so maybe the racing commissions should set this up again if people want lot of horses in all 3.

I do.
In the 80's - they took the 3 separate races and acted like you didn't win anything unless you won all 3 - like that was the only goal...or at least, they tried to force horses into all the races.
It was like NASCAR or something...you got points for finishing every race.

Best way point could have been made to the masses
I do realize that horse people do not care what the masses think

Stupid point. Never been used before. Talk about an asterisk after a win....

The man was a poor sport, and he is wrong. The Triple Crown format is firmly etched in stone and is meant to be a test of ability, soundness, and stamina. All triple crown winners have had this ability; California Chrome was gallant in defeat. I have been watching the triple crown since 1962, and I have never seen such a poor sport in my life. You didn't hear the owners of other colts who defeated in the Belmont moan and groan like this man. If you don't like the format, don't run my man.

Please explain why stupid point.
You are probably right, though. He says nothing if his horse wins.
Still does not made point less valid.

That hasn't been a condition for any of the other winners. Why now?
Because we are breeding shittier horses?

Please provide situations similar to this where TC hopeful lost Belmont to multiple horses that ran neither derby nor preakness
I really dont know how to research such a question

Owner of Smarty Jones, lost in final 100, to a horse that skipped the preakness.
Mike Pegram lost the triple frown by a nostril, and he never cried, whined about race, and the such.
No one has ever cried about the race after losing, expect this turd

Yea. I'm a complete horse racing noob, so I just learned about these horses not having to race all 3 big ones. Seems pretty unfair to me.

Your right but back in the day many horses ran most if not all 3 races. Some of the rivalries were legendary. Alydar and Affirmed come to mind.

Plus, they later found a hairline fracture. Who knows, it may have started in that Belmont.
