The time to complain about the competition is before the race, not wait until you see if you win first. Sounds like a sore loser to me.

There have been a number of triple crown winners who had to beat fresh horses.

That's why it's so hard to win the Triple Crown. Did Secretariat or Affirmed race against any horses that sat out the Preakness?

Has it always been the way it is now? Or was there a rule change at some point along the line?

Yes they did. Happens every year.

It's never been a rule. It's always been this way.

But the Belmont is an take on all comers type race always has been.

Your right but back in the day many horses ran most if not all 3 races. Some of the rivalries were legendary. Alydar and Affirmed come to mind.

The game has changed and it will keep a Triple Crown from happening again any time soon.

He's right, we probably won't see another triple crown winner if things don't change. Smarty Jones was far and away the best 3 year old in 04, but the grind is too much when there are fresh horses running in the Belmont.

There will be another Triple Crown winner one day, and he will be an incredible horse. California Chrome is not an incredible horse. He tried, he had position, but he simply did not have the speed and endurance.

That's the way it should be. It should take a very very special horse to win the Triple Crown.

wow

the wussification that the typical california wants, and people supporting it, is cute.

He lost, and wasn't close. many other horses lost in final strides and none of their owners cried like pussies.

IMO he should be happy those horses didn't run the Kentucky Derby because he wouldnt have that race. The best horse won today's race!

The reason that "rivalry" was so big was it was 1-2 all 3 races with Alydar closing each time.

Plus you had the death of Alydar with his lines from Native Dancer and him being sire of Alysheba etc has enhanced the legacy of that rivalry.

Also you had East West part of that rivalry...

Alydar was raced in Florida and Affirmed was the California racer.

If I am correct, Aspy may have to correct me Alydar and Affirmed ran the fastest mile ever at the Belmont.

Secretariat ran the Belmont Stakes well over FOUR SECONDS faster than California Chrome, and "Big Red" had not only won both previous races, he was still accelerating (!) at the end, winning by 31 (!) lengths. California Chrome didn't lose because of unfair rules or fresh horses from competitors: he lost because he just wasn't as great as the hype made him out to be. Still a mighty fine horse, though!

Shouldn't change it.

Who cares if you beat the same field in 3 races...the only unique part is the distance then.

The unique part is different adversaries - even if they are totally rested.

Plenty of horses in the past - have simply geared for the Belmont Stakes - especially when it was their home track. Each title means something of it's own...the title isn't TC winner - it's Derby Champ, Preakness Champ or Belmont Champ. The TC is just that extra something special...that we bestow a title to for the accomplishment.
