Bleh... guess he's an innings eater if we have injury problems.

This and they must be close to dealing K.K.

Hopefully we never have to see him but pitchers do go down so who knows.

Trio jockeying to be Braves' fifth starter

quote:

Mike Minor, the seventh overall pick in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, will compete with fellow rookie Brandon Beachy and recently signed veteran Rodrigo Lopez for the fifth spot in the rotation behind Tim Hudson, Derek Lowe, Tommy Hanson and Jair Jurrjens.

"I'm comfortable to go with rookies," said Gonzalez, who did just that while managing the Marlins. "We'll see what happens in Spring Training. Rodrigo gives us a little backup, but we're looking for the young guys to come through. It should be a good competition."

It's like having a Bronson Arroyo lite as a backup plan. Did you see the write up Dave Cameron did comparing their numbers? They are strikingly similar. Yet, their contracts are not so similar! Of course Arroyo has been putting up 200 innings a year the last several years while 2010 was Lopez first year with significant innings since 2006. Still, it made me chuckle a bit.

Oh, and apparently Chipper is mashing so hard the cover just won't stay on the ball! LINK

Braves announce Non-roster invitees

NON-ROSTER INVITEES (20)

PITCHERS (8): RHP Michael Broadway, LHP Johan Flande, RHP Kenshin Kawakami, RHP Rodrigo Lopez,

LHP Brett Oberholtzer, RHP Jay Sborz, RHP Julio Teheran and RHP Arodys Vizcaino.

CATCHERS (5): Christian Bethancourt, J.C. Boscan, Wilkin Castillo, Braeden Schlehuber and Jesus Sucre.

INFIELDERS (3): Shawn Bowman, Ed Lucas and Tyler Pastornicky.

OUTFIELDERS (4): Brent Clevlen, Jose Constanza, Mycal Jones and Wilkin Ramirez.

I was wondering why Delgado wasn't on there, turns out he is already on the 40-man roster. I'm definitely going to have to make a couple trips to Gwinnett this Spring.

Jurrjens is more valuable as a #3 starter than anybody you could get for him right now.

it's almost not fair. A healthy JJ matching up against other #3's is going to result in a lotta wins for us

You're right and it really depends on what kind of year he has before any assumptions can be made about what will happen

Some moves will be happening at the end of the year, that's for certain.

after the season you'll have:

Lowe with one more year
Hudson with one more year plus an option year
Jurrjens with two remaining arbitration years
Hanson still has another year till arbitration
Minor is here to stay I believe

then Delgado and Teheran will be ready

I think Jurrjens is gone since we probably won't resign him at the end of his contract anyways and his value should be at his max depending on if he continues to produce like he can. That makes room for one of the guys. Then the other can be brought up later in the season if need be or can wait till after 2012 and take Lowe's spot(I expect Hudson's option to get picked up)

Would be nice to see if someone would take care of most of Lowe's last year though.
