Just watched IMG play and it's unbelievable how much talent is on one team! I think it's safe to say that not all of these players come from affluent homes and are able to afford the outrageous tuition, so how is IMG able to keep its doors open? I read that tuition starts at $45,000 a year on the low end.

When you consider the salaries for coaches, teachers and staff, room and board for players, food, travel, equipment, uniforms, luxury buses and other vehicles, not to mention a campus and facilities many colleges would love to have, you're talking about an enormous amount of money.

You also have to consider that IMG also has baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track and field and volleyball teams that also travel throughout the country and some internationally to compete.

I'm not a financial genius, but I feel confident in saying it takes tens of millions of dollars to just break even.

I just don't understand how the economics work when you're bringing in a lot of players from impoverished homes and the school can still afford to offer everything it does.

I thought they had to sell it to an investor because they were going bankrupt.

I thought they let in kids who are talented but not all world to fill out rosters but they’re wealthy and pay a huge tuition check (a well off kid from my baseball team in high school did this) and that subsidizes the blue chips who are not quite as numerous but obviously more than at a typical high school.

It cost $110k+ for volleyball and golf…they make a shite ton of money. They have really nice facilities. My son enjoyed being there, but he never looked into attending school.

I would venture to say that they make the majority of their income off of scholarship $$.

One of the country’s best high school football and basketball schools—and really, most all sports—has been sold.

According to a report by Herald-Tribune’s Derek Gilliam, IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, has been sold by Endeavor Group Holdings to private equity group BPEA EQT for a total of $1.25 billion. Endeavor president Mark Shapiro says the school is in good hands.

IMG is a private, sports-centric school that costs nearly $90,000 per year in tuition and boarding, per the Wall Street Journal.

I’d imagine they get supported through brand deals.

IMG is the child of Bollettieri‘s. They survive on the tuition of kids that will never amount to anything, but their parents will fork over 70k tuition plus more when they have a “fundraiser”

The actual stud tennis players that went there paid $0….

Unless they are awful with money, they are doing just fine. There is no shortage of delusional parents

A) rich kids whose parents dream of them becoming the next superstars in their chosen sport subsidize the scholarship kids

Sometimes the rich kids are elite athletes who are as good as anyone the school has given scholarships to, like the Korda sisters. Many times the rich kids are primarily helpful for cash flow.

B) sponsorships from companies like Under Armor that want to be associated with IMG.

C) I suspect this is relatively minimal but broadcast money for football and basketball.

The business model is to produce pros and then become their agents

I’m under the impression that the same thing happens for lots AAU basketball teams, especially if they don’t have a wealthy benefactor like Jayson Tatum, Bradley Beal, LeBron, etc.

The 11th guy on the team has a dad who owns 5 car dealerships and thinks his kid can eventually play D-1 basketball so he creates his own AAU team or takes a stake with an established program.

I know a kid who went for a semester for lacrosse but came back because her parents thought she was too young. She will be going back for high school. The family is wealthy enough to afford the tuition and they think it’s a great opportunity for their kid. Their kid is good now and has potential. I think the brand name matters a lot to them. I would think a NE prep school would be cheaper, better academically, and give more exposure for sports.

As far as subsidizing the rest of the school, there isn’t a private school around that the rich don’t support the poor.

Maybe Institut Le Rosey? They seem to be very happy to just take the highest bidders with minimal interest in taking poor kids with great academics.

But even Exeter, Andover, Lawrenceville, Choate, etc aren’t at all reliant on delusional parents being a key part of their business model. Hundreds of parents respect the academics there and want their kids to make connections and will gladly pay full price.

Because the agents are fronting the money as an investment to represent them when they go pro and with nil opportunity
