Yea because little league is a joke in this country. The best players aren't playing in that

The type of athlete that ends up being wide receivers, DB's, and hybrid TE's are what we need to migrate towards soccer. Look how many 6'4+ wide outs we see who can run and are very agile, they would make great midfielders and defenders. But when those kids grow up poor, where do you think they will go.....to the sport they see all the time that pays well! We need to have Tim Howard impregnate Hope Solo many times to develop a pool of goalies!

This is such a stupid comment to make that I stopped reading right there.

Lolwut? In no way did we look "bad". Everyone around the world puts infinitely more emphasis on soccer than we do and we still made it to the round of 16. We had one of the best goalie performances in the last half a century but we just couldn't capitalize on our shots. We never got blown out and could have easily won every match played.

I'm not even a soccer by any stretch of the imagination and I think you sound ridiculous.

All because we're shitty at one sport,

let's be clear. we're not shitty at soccer

we're in like the top 15 range for the world

we just had the misfortune to play 4 teams who may also be in that top 15

The odds of reaching the highest level in those sports is less-likely than soccer.

Soccer has more teams and more opportunity.

we will never catch up with college as a goal

college should be like what D2 is in football. a great opportunity for inferior players with the occassional rare talent to emerge

that's what I always say when I hear people get so upset that "we suck" or spout of this kind of stuff

there are hundreds of national teams

we are almost always in the top 15-20 IN THE WORLD

We are a good team, we are not a great team.

even if we were like top 8, it's still a long way to get into the very top tier

soccer is like CFB. it is very tiered and the top teams are vastly superior to ones not far away in terms of numbers

The highest paid Soccer player makes 6.7mil iirc
I'm fairly confident in saying that if there was a US born athlete who was a truly elite(Ronaldo/Messi type) soccer player, he would be pretty easily the highest paid athlete in America.

So you want us to guess which one of our kids will be the next Lebron, then force him to only play soccer, just so the US could maybe go further in the World Cup?

Makes sense

People seem to ignore that we made it farther than Spain, Portugal, England, Italy, and other more traditional soccer powers.

We didn't win, we must suck!

Right

like LSU 2011 versus West Virginia. Good team, top 10, still lose by 4 TD's

I would love for the USA to make an all out effort to be great at soccer. The 'problem' is the NFL and NBA will forever be our nation's biggest sports. Yes, I know there's baseball, but admit that it's a dying sport until October comes by.

MLS needs to invest more money into better production teams in every city that can record games that don't look like high school camcorder highlight videos! The U.S. has young talent that the MLS can push and market, but that's their own damn fault for not trying harder.

That effort is in place. US soccer 2014 is leaps and bounds beyond what it was 10 years ago.

Our team is pretty damn fast and one of the more athletic teams in world. We lose for lack of tactical awareness most times. We were faster than Belgium but Belgium moves the ball more efficiently. People who dont understand the game tend to confuse the two.

I've said it in other threads but people don't want to hear it. I'm not sure if it's because this is a college sports board or what, but we won't "catch up" to the rest of the world until we get rid of the NCAA restrictions on practice time.

It's more than just practice restrictions. Title IX prevents a lot of colleges from even fielding men's soccer teams. For soccer to grow at the college level, something would have to be done with regard to Title IX.

For MLS to be successful, there needs to be more owners like the group that owns the Seattle team. MLS needs owners that will pour money into the organization, buy the best players, and drive up interest in the sport. I think Seattle averages something like 40,000/game in attendance.

we don't want soccer to grow in college. having Title 9 kill it is great for the development of our men's national team
