When I was in Mexico about 15 years ago I kept a whole bunch of Peso coins and put them in my golf bag. I still use them to mark my ball to this day. They are the cheapest option besides free but they are better quality.

Someone may have touched on it. I haven't really noticed a pro fix a ball mark before although I'm sure it happens.

Saw Rory do it at the Masters last weekend a couple times. First time I've ever noticed a top pro doing that.

I use a nickel. I'm going to go sit in the corner and cry now, because I clearly suck at life.

TV coverage doesn't pick up on it much, because it's usually when they are just milling around the green or just walking up to it, while tv coverage is showing other golfers or in commercial break.

Just seems odd that they all feel this way when the majority of the divot tools sold at golf shops are this style divot tool.

I use the one pictured because it's easy to get out of the pocket and I don't have to dig for the ball mark or pull my pocket back down after pulling out the ball mark. I can understand some or most not liking the style I use. But I can't imagine all of the ones I've seen hate that style.

I'm trying to tell you it's because using the divot tool ball marker is bush league. Just like using the snap on your golf glove. Reach in your pocket and grab a coin.

Divot =/= ball mark. So, why the hell is this thing call a divot tool? I sure as shite am not repairing my divots with this thing.

Because it's a useless tool, marketed to casual golfers that think they need it.

Either a tee, or one that's narrow and angled like this:

The Scotty Cameron divot tool is not that great IMO

I use one called the frogger or hopper from Amazon

The magnet makes the ball mark hop back into place when put in your pocket automatically, "supposedly"

Eta: I want to try one of the "spider" style tools. Interesting concept
