A buddy asked me the other day why the PGA Tour guys don't have the typical divot tool/ball marker combo that clips on the side of your pocket. Every time I go in a golf shop, this is predominantly the style divot tool I see, but I can't recall ever seeing a pro golfer use it. I didn't know the answer to his question and couldn't find it online, so I came here. Does anyone know why the pros don't use this type of divot tool?

I'm thinking its a PGA Tour rule that the divot tools have to be in your pocket, but I could be way off.

Here is the style divot tool that I see a lot, but don't see the pros use:

But the golfer themselves seem to always mark the balls with a coin or something similar.

What style do you notice them using?

I have ones that clip and ones that don't in my bag, but I always just keep them in my pocket.

I've seen them use it when they leave a dent in the grass on the green.

OK? Fixing the divot and marking the ball are two separate events.

You are correct, and I am an idiot.

Using those as a ball marker is bush league. About like using the button on your glove. Marking your ball should be a smooth one handed reach in the pocket then placing the market on the green.

Most pros fix a divot with a tee

I've just noticed that none of them use that particular style of divot tool that clips to their pocket. I've seen them use a divot tool and a ball marker that they pull out of their pocket. It just seems weird that I've never seen anyone use that style divot tool before, considering they are very prevalent in the amateur golf community.

Most people do more harm than good with green divots.

Take a tee and start with a wide circumference and poke and push to the center. Work your way in and don't lift the grass up and out.

All you need is a tee.

I think you are missing the point of my question. It isn't about what I should use or how to fix a divot.

The question is simply this: Why have I not seen one pro use the divot tool that attaches to the pocket? Is there a rule that states that you can't use them on tour?

I'm sure a lot of them have various tools for fixing divot, but to see no one using this style of tool seems odd.

I've seen everyone from scratch golfers to superintendents pry up with a tool

I cringe and want to say something to educate them but I just let it be

Someone may have touched on it. I haven't really noticed a pro fix a ball mark before although I'm sure it happens.

I would assume it's a caddy duty

Because they don't want more shite in their pocket when they play. And it's completely unnecessary and does more harm than good. And they don't want to look like a dufus.

The pros fix them all the time, you won't see it on tv much.

The pros don't clip those on the side of their pocket, they keep their ball markers in their fanny packs.

I've never seen a caddy do it. I've seen pros do it themselves all the time. Tee is the way to go.

And if you're marking your ball with anything other than a quarter you suck at life.

Why don't the pros use them? The same reason they don't put head covers on their irons......they're for chumps
