How Tebow's Baseball Plan Came into Focus

quote:

The frequency of the meetings gradually increased, until Moeller spent about 80 hours working one-on-one with Tebow on hitting, fielding and talking the nuances of baseball.

quote:

You're around him, and it's infectious,'' Moeller said. "He's upbeat 100 percent of the time. I mean, I have to take the bat away from him because he doesn't want to stop. His hands might be bleeding and he's like, 'No, we're not done yet.' And I'm like, 'Yes, we're done. This isn't football. More isn't always better.'"

quote:

Some veteran talent evaluators -- people with real baseball chops -- take Tebow's quest seriously and are rooting for him to succeed. They talk about his competitive nature and the dangers of shortchanging a dedicated athlete who pours his entire being into proving something.

"Personally, I think it's awesome that he wants to try baseball,'' said Boston Red Sox scout Eddie Bane, the man who chose Mike Trout with the 25th pick in the draft as Los Angeles Angels scouting director in 2009. "We can use all the great athletes, leaders and super personalities we can get in this game. I say, let him take a shot and we can look at it down the road and see what kind of progress he has made.''

quote:

"People love to throw darts at him, that's for sure,'' Moeller said. "People complain about him more than Ray Rice. I say that jokingly, but I'm like, 'Really? This guy is helping starving kids in the Philippines. And this is the guy we're going to throw darts at?'"

quote:

"It's a strong, one-plane swing,'' the scout said. "There's some tension in the body, and it looked like there's more strength than bat speed. But I thought his upper body rotated freely -- better than I would have expected. That being said, it's easy to find guys that can take batting practice and throw bullpens. The game is what really matters.''

quote:

"He's a very good, strong athlete,'' the scout said. "He runs and throws well. He has a big heart and work ethic, and he has God on his side. So he may have a chance to figure things out.

"Playing devil's advocate, he hasn't seen a good fastball, curveball, slider or changeup in his lifetime, and hitting a baseball may be the hardest athletic thing to do. Michael Jordan failed at baseball. So I'm going to say analytically, never having seen him, it's 65-35 he will never play in the major leagues.''

quote:

He constantly reminds Tebow that "baseball is tough on the brain." But one day they were chatting at the cage, and Tebow's answer to the question made him see the challenge in a new light. "Tim told me, 'Think about this: I won the Heisman Trophy. I was Athlete of the Year. Sports Illustrated, etc. Two years later I didn't have a job, and everybody was consistently telling me what I can't do,'" Moeller said. "And I thought, 'You know what? You actually have had to deal with that mental side a lot.' The fact that he still has this outlook gives me confidence he can handle it.

Depending on what college, A ball is a step down for some. You are facing kids straight out of HS, or off the islands, in stadiums with as much chain link fence as most high schools...

Tim Tebow just arrived for his showcase. He will face two right-handed pitchers during the workout today: David Aardsma and Chad Smith.

Under 6.7 is a very good time in baseball. Very good. Under 6.7 at 252 pounds is fantastic

Where is that dumbass that said Tebow isnt athletic enough for baseball?

He likely wont make it, but it wont be due to athleticism

Tebow's 60-yard dash time: 6.6 seconds at 255 pounds. Jeter and Bryce Harper have been timed at 6.6. Pretty fast for that size.

Probably could run 6.5 or better if he dropped 20-30 lbs.

Damn Tebow, eat a salad.

No BP yet. He is taking practice at center and right field. Watched some videos. Footwork is slightly off, but not bad. Looks to have above average arm strength.

He's always been a great athlete. his mechanics just weren't optimal for qb. He should have tried mayb tight end?

I wish him the best, he's a good dude

Athleticism and strength were never in question.

Can the terrible QB hit is what I'm interested in.

If he had converted right out of college, I think he would have been a good TE.

I dont see how bumbling around in A ball is better than playing QB in a Canadian or even Arena league, or possibly TE or FB in the NFL. Makes no sense, Timmy.
