re: NFL TV Ratings Down Significantly

The NFL is becoming harder to watch because the product on the field is being hurt by the new rules. The spirit of protecting the players is a good and noble idea, but the real culprit of this whole thing is the art of tackling.
Players lost the art of the tackle but instead have tried to get "hits". This is evidenced by the missile tackle--where a guy launches his shoulder at a player with the ball in an attempt to jar the ball out or get on ESPN later that evening.
This can all be solved by enforcing proper tackling and ball stripping techniques. Wrap up, try to strip the ball, and don't try to break your neck by diving headfirst into a player's hips.
Not every situation calls for a form tackle. Also news flash ball carriers run in a way specifically designed not to be form tackled

Your gripe is that there's too much pre-game analysis?
Add that too the "dumb reasons to hate the NFL" list.
There is truth to the burnout/scorched earth theory.
It happens with all forms of entertainment. When you oversaturate the market, there is an enevitable backlash. Look at "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." It became a phenomenon so they moved it to two nights a week and it got bigger. Then they moved it to three nights and it was still popular. Then they started stunting and doing it six nights a week and people got sick of it and it was off of primetime two years later. It happened to American Idol. It was the biggest show on Earth five years ago and now it's off the air because Fox was running it three nights a week and it got old FAST.
I thought 2 hour blocks of NFL programming on Ruesday afternoon was cool when it started. Now they're talking about Tony Romo's future for literally the nine millionth time and I'm out. I've got other things to do. Hell, if I'm home on Tuesday afternoon now, a nap is more satisfying than that crap.

But all the pre-game shite has zero effect on the actual product. It's a separate thing altogether. Don't like the pre-game analysis? Don't watch. Just tune in for the game.
Saying you don't like the NFL because of the amount of pre-game analysis is some silly shite.

The biggest culprit in the decline in the NFL...
Is changing the game would eventually catch up...
It took about 10 years but people finally said frick it.
Nobody can hit the QB, nobody can touch receivers, I don't know what a catch is anymore...P.I. is ridiculous and ruins games every damn time. Strategy is out...just throw it up and get your flag.
Go watch 2001 NFL games on Youtube and compare to today. It's like a damn different sport.
I think the NFL is losing that generation that grew up with the sport in the 80's/90's. Because it's like their memories and childhood are being raped by Goodell.

If it wasn't for sports betting and the fan duel sites the NFL would be down another 10-20 %. .MHO

How are we going to be subjected to the fricking Bears in primetime twice in a 6 day period? Try harder NFL.

I'm not voting in this year's election because I'm fricking sick of politics on television. Did you see Donald Trump's tweet blah blah blah. Hillary Clinton email yada yada yada. It's fricking annoying and obnoxious and nobody discusses anything of substance anymore. There's actually more coverage but we're actually less informed. And I damn well know I'm not the only one who feels that way.
It gets to the point when you hear about National Anthem protests from both sides, how the drunk wifebeater player turned his life around and you need to pull for him now (and you know it's just PR bullshite), the latest media-manufactured "controversy" about somebody's tweet or a photo that appeared in the New York Post or TMZ, the behind-the-scenes look at some famous player's newest commercial, some irrelevant story about the flavor of the month like Tebow and Manziel so that you can shamelessly attract more eyeballs to the set, and you start choking on the superficiality of it all and you say "I'm done with ALL OF IT."
When you start emphasizing the entertainment aspect over the sports aspect, the Xs and Os aspect of it, it creates the impression that the league is sacrificing its integrity for the sake of mass appeal.
There is a backlash. It's subtle, but it's there.

You don't see how voluntarily subjecting yourself to the meaningless bullshite and then complaining about the meaningless bullshite is silly? It's voluntary. It's not part of the actual game.
If you don't like the amount of pre- and post-game analysis, don't watch. Just tune in for the game. It's a simple solution to a simple problem.

I really miss kickoff returns.
And there is this... TD, instant replay...commercial break...confirmed TD... Extra point... Commercial...kick off touchback...commercial...3and out..,, punt...commercial.,,
Not to mention there were probably seven penalties In that span.

It's hard to believe that even with all of the game stoppages (penalties, commercials, replays) NFL games are still shorter than CFB games.

But you know it's there. You don't live in a bubble. And it does affect your perception of the entire product whether you watch it or not.
You know I am a Drew Brees fan. I am eternally grateful for what he has done for my favorite team. But however much respect I have for him as a player, I'm freaking sick of him with his dozens of commercials, his tweets about Jimmy Johns, his 384th appearance on Ellen or some other talk show, etc., while all the while subjecting everyone to salary cap hell and endless contract negotiations. I don't watch any of that crap but I know it's there, and it can't help but not affect how you feel about him when you know the team's going to shite and he's out there shooting ANOTHER commercial. When you're through the looking glass and you see it as an entertainment business and not a athletic contest, you just can't unsee it and take put the genie back in the bottle.
And I know it's always been there and I probably voluntarily chose not to see it. But today it does feel worse because simultaneously there's so much of it that you can't avoid it and they're so bad at it now that you see through the facade of it all and know that it's all just a bunch of bullshite propaganda.
But you disagree and that's cool. I see where you're coming from and that might be true for some people.

This especially.
So many games are a bore because there's no flow. Everything is a penalty, everything has to be reviewed, etc...If John Elway had "The Drive" today, it would have taken a half-hour.
But for me the biggest detriment is what Goodell thinks is great...the pitch and catch ease of the game now. We're told people want to see tons of scoring...actually, we want to see strategy...not every catch so easily completed five yards off the line of scrimmage.
God, I would love if the NFL could go back to bump and run - imagine if you could jam receivers off the line like before...Wes Welker among many receivers and the Pats would have had trouble in the old NFL.

For the love of Jahweh, this.

Yes, please make it once again legal to play defense.

The NFL used to be an escape for me. Now it is just another source of division where you hear more about off the field controversies than actual game play. Hard to enjoy that.

You can still jam within 5 yards of line of scrimmage. You just can't mug the entire way down the field.

15 years ago: all day and every game. Sports bar all day Sunday. Sunday Ticket when I had DirecTV
10 years ago: was out of state so I went to sports bars to watch the Saints, but left when it was over and watched whatever game was on TV
5 years ago: Still watch Saints every week. Watch other games only if I care or have a fantasy outcome riding on it.
Now: I'm about done with the Saints this year. If they don't get back in it, I'm not going out of my way to watch them. For the first time ever, I deliberately drafted Saints so I don't have to watch other games. I gotta really care to watch another game
5 years from now: who knows?

If the NFL offices are not having a serious conversation about these ratings and their lack of interest they are idiots...there was a poll that came out today that said 44% of all fans would give up watching football if the Kaepernick shite spreads and saturates the sport....they're in real trouble here.
I also think ESPNs full MSNBC angle is keeping people away from MNF...I know have cancelled all my auto record shows from their network and will only watch that network if I absolutely have to.
