You just can't touch (at all) the entire way down the field.
If you breathe on a WR past 5-yards, you get a PI.
There was a 5-yard rule in the 90's too. . .but you could still be physical with WR's.
Now it is reasonable for TE's and WR's to be tall and lanky. Not recommended, but reasonable.

You can thank Peyton, Dungy, Polian for the changing of the illegal contact emphasis... They're the ones who cried like little girls to the league after NE beat the shite out of their receivers in the '04 playoffs...

First is production value. For whatever reason, in general NFL games are dull. There's just something about how its broadcast. I can't really explain it. It feels...hollow, I guess? Even the theme music they all use is boring. No one seems particularly excited in the booth. Announcers and color guys seem almost monotone. For most of the games, it seems like the crowd is muted.
This is the answer right here.
I really noticed it this weekend. The production of NFL games has turned to absolute shite and I can't understand why.
It used to be before games there was an intro, fantastic theme music, and announcers who cared what the hell is going on. Its extremely watered down right now and there is hardly any passion in the production.
Check out this clip from NBC in the mid 90's. THIS is how a game should start.

ESPN and Fox have both had to cut back on NFL production $$ because of massive losses due to their networks' mistakes.
I heard ESPN has cut back on the number of cameras used per game... I have no idea why NBC production has fallen, it is actually doing OK ratings wise across she network.

The Monday Night Football production is really bad this year.
I've never noticed production of a game in my life until this year after seeing what MNF has become. It used to be fantastic.

In two weeks alone, a lot of close games have been decided on refs either fricking it up because they threw flags that should have never been thrown or not thrown flags that needed to be thrown.
refs need to be more consistent with PI/holding, they can't swallow the whistle or flag for 3 quarters to only go on a rampage about it near the end of the game. and vise versa.

Outside of week one, The product from last season and week 2 has been terrible. There's been a lot of bad football since last season.

Part of why I like the CFB more than NFL football is because the NFL seems so predictable from play to play. It's seems so damn hard to run the ball. Seems like this cuts out exciting plays in the NFL, that happen in the college game. The gap in talent in college allows for more crazy stuff to happen, and allows players to make impacts in the game.
Just feels like I'm watching the same game each time I turn on an NFL contest.

Now: I'm about done with the Saints this year. If they don't get back in it, I'm not going out of my way to watch them. For the first time ever, I deliberately drafted Saints so I don't have to watch other games. I gotta really care to watch another game
as far as caring about who actually wins, yeah, the Saints are all I have in the NFL. But playing fantasy football.. I don't give a damn if my players team wins or whatever. The main thing is I just hope they don't get hurt.
We have this huge weekly pot that people play at work and its for NFL only so I follow the league enough to try and make an educated guess each week. Not off to a good start there either this year cause I've paid less attention to it. They don't do college games because there are too many teams to pick from and nobody cares about games out of the region unless its a bowl game or their team is playing an opponent from another conference. I don't know.. I didn't make the rules that's just the way it is.
I cut my cord this summer with cable, its mostly crap and waste of money to me. I pick up the main channels in High Def with an outdoor antenna and that's good enough for me.
from the constant ESPN sucks threads on here and the other ones that don't have much to do with the outcome of games is friendly reminder I'm not missing out on anything as far as cable.

what a hysterical thread to read...it's a time honored tradition to explain away a loss of ratings as having nothing to do with the programming that is being tuned out
but it's always, ALWAYS rooted with the programming. IF the NFL is losing ratings, it's because fewer people want to watch it...you can dice it anyway you want...there's a lot of creativity in this thread in terms of defending the NFL.
oh but but twitter
oh but but illegal streaming
but but the presidential election
ratings are down for a variety of reasons all of them squarely on the shoulders of the NFL

they are all cutting back b/c they all massively overpaid to have the NFL.
it's the same reason ESPN's CFB has been declining to the point they are using broadcasters who are watching on TV in Bristol for some games.
the sports tv money bubble is about to pop.

Would not be surprised.
I wonder what would happen to stadium revenue and attendance.
I go to one or 2 LSU games every year for the excitement, atmosphere and memories, but I can't imagine going to all the games and sitting there while the guy in the red hat stands on the field. It's terrible.

Ive watched a combined 0 complete, non-saints/superbowl, NFL games in the last 2 seasons. I watch every saints game, and sometimes check a game on tv for like 10 minutes. But i just dont give a frick. If my best friend and me didnt share a fantasy team, id stop doing that too.

Except it isn't irrelevant.
unless you are saying that liking college football means you have to like NFL football without exception. . .
Then I am wagering you do not understand the point you are responding to.
Of course you don't have to like both. If you love college football however you kind of do need to have a vested interest in the NFL succeeding since college football is the farm system for NFL. If the NFL fails college football as we know it today goes with it.
Since we are posting on a college football based website I assume everyone would realize that apparently not.

Completely agree. I couldn't believe some of the contracts ESPN was throwing out there during all the realignments. They even threw out a huge offer to the crappy Big East lol.
