I think the commentators on FOX, TBS, and ESPN are partly to blame. I find it very hard to watch a full game on any of these networks because the commentators for the MLB games are just so boring and monotone. If these stations could find better guys like Kyle Peterson, who is great at calling college baseball games, then I would think viewership would go up a few percentage points.

average MLB game is half an hour shorter than the average NFL game.

Viewership is falling fast, down 30 percent across ESPN, TBS, and Fox since 2007

maybe because watching games on those networks are borderline insufferable. the announcers on fox and espn are the worst in sports

They need to implement rules that result in pitches occurring at a more rapid rate.

Too many batters calling time out with their hand. Too many pitchers standing there.

They need to juice the ball some.

They need to shorten the games, but it's been 9 innings for a very long time and would be weird to change the format.

Perhaps they should remove the infield fly rule?

Even with the delays, there are more minutes of action in a baseball game than a pro-football game.

99% of the time a batter calls time is because the pitcher is taking too long to throw the pitch or the pitcher is working too fast. If you get a pitcher like Mark Buehrle who pitches the ball the second he receives it from the catcher, batters have to call time to get set. I think if the ump thinks the pitcher is purposely delaying the game that it should be a ball or a balk if runners are on base.

I can see why the average fan might think that, but I would much rather see a pitchers duel between Verlander and Kershaw than a high scoring slugfest. One of the greatest baseball games of all time of was a pitchers duel between Jack Morris and John Smoltz in game 7 of 1991 World Series.

There's plenty of good exciting players who hit lots of home runs. There's no need to force bonds/McGwire/Sosa numbers back into the game.

If you don't like baseball, you don't like baseball. Pumping up stats, shortening games, and shortening seasons won't make these people all of a sudden start watching baseball. If anything it will just turn off the true baseball fan.

It's simple. The Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and Dodgers aren't in the WS every year. Every sport except the NFL is dependent on its big market teams for solid ratings.

The games are way too long and have been getting even longer the last few years. The average length of my Twins games this year is 3:01. That's insane.

Well I'm 32 and I hate watching baseball. Neither of us make a difference though...

I'm not saying younger people don't like baseball. I loved playing baseball and I enjoy going to a baseball game. I'm sure as hell not sitting through 9 innings on TV in April, May, June, July, August, or likely even September though. I'd be willing to bet this is how many guys feel who grew up during the rise of the NFLs popularity or the Jordan era NBA.

The one team I have ever been a fan of and given a shite about is the Astros. Through thick and thin, they have been my team since 1980. Even in this rebuilding mode and them losing 100 games a year, I still want to watch. But ya know what? I CAN'T. Baton Rouge doesn't get the Astros channel on cable. That would be ok...I would PAY to get mlb.com. But ya know what? For some fricktarded reason, the Astros are blacked out here and I can't even pay to watch them. So now ya know what? frick MLB. Sorry, I am not interested in your Yankees/Red Sox love fest. You have lost a fan...whether you give a shite or not.

The ball is already juiced. They proved that last week on Sport Science. An MLB ball will go 20 feet further if struck with same exact bat speed and launch angle as a college baseball.

I'm not a fan of baseball and really nothing would make me watch it; however, there's got to be some ways to speed the game up. Do the pitchers really need 5 minutes between each half inning to warm up? If they really do need to warm up, is there not something they could do in the dugout besides eat sunflower seeds? That would really make the game go faster. After the 3rd out, get the other team out there and start playing.

Lack of parity is the reason baseball sucks right now. No one wants to watch the Astros lose with a team payroll less than Alex Rodriguez.

It's more like 2 and I'm sure all the stations would LOVE to cut down their commercial time

This is what happens when they ban steroids. It was the dumbest thing MLB has ever done!

they hired the king of short term thinkers to run baseball 20 years ago. He's totally fricked the sport in many ways but probably the one that's driving lower viewership is the expanded playoffs. Short term they saw the playoff bump with no deterioration to the regular season but long term it's slowly turned people off during the dog days.

And while the playoffs hurt the regular season, interleague play has hurt the Series and the All-Star game. These were novelties with no real feel for which league was better. Fans of clubs in both leagues tuned in to see which league would win. Now they play all the time and these things aren't novel. There really are a bunch more short term things like this that have undermined MLB long term. And all these things are coming home to roost.

To be fair though viewership in the local markets is better than it has ever been.

Key question is how does mlb.tv viewership look?

I hate the tv announcers. Watch almost every braves game on mlb.tv with the radio overlay.
