I think Fernandez has been the best pitcher in the NL this year even though I am a Cubs fan with two pitchers in that race.

He could have won the Cy Young as well this year.

He was definitely a great pitcher and this is tragic news, but he wasn't in contention for the Cy Young this year. I'm not even sure if he was in the top 10.

My friend asked me on Saturday who my picks were for MVP and Cy Young.

Mike Trout
Corey Kluber

Kris Bryant
Jose Fernandez

Jose has the highest fWAR of any pitcher in baseball (a rough approximation saying he has been the most valuable pitcher in baseball). His strikeout rate is unreal. He absolutely should be in contention regardless of his truly awful death.

Yesterday was pretty fricked up. Arnie and Jose Fernandez die and Les gets fired.

182 innings is not enough?
Arrieta has 192, Kendricks 179, Lester 200 for comparison

Some more reports have emerged regarding the accident. Fernandez was a passenger in the boat and died on impact and not from drowning. Also, no alcohol or additional substances were a factor in the crash.

Ultimately, though, the case for Fernandez comes down to innings pitched. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America, the group that votes on end-of-season awards, values number of games played highly. In fact, it’s the second thing voters are told to weigh when voting on the MVP award.

That’s where Fernandez’s candidacy falls short. Fernandez’s 182 1/3 innings pale in comparison to Madison Bumgarner’s 219 1/3 innings pitched, which leads the NL. Given that Bumgarner, Max Scherzer and Johnny Cueto, to name a few, have similar cases from a statistical standpoint but have thrown more innings, Fernandez will likely be a runner-up for the award.

While Fernandez winning the award would make for a great story — and some voters may be tempted to elevate Fernandez due to his tragic death — voters aren’t supposed to cast their ballots based on narrative. Yes, “general character, disposition, loyalty and effort” are considered in the voting process. And you could easily make the case Fernandez excelled in each of those areas. But on-field performance is weighed more highly in the voting.

Could Jose Fernandez win the Cy Young- Yahoo Sports

I hope they don't diminish the meaning of the award just because the guy passed away.

what??!?! He had nasty numbers if he wins the award its bc he had an insane season, look at that k/9 number thats incredible for a starter. This is coming off back to back injury seasons. Arrieta has been mediocre for the last few months, the fact he died they should just give it to him anyways unanimously because those numbers are well worthy of it. Cueto and Bumgarner were on a team with the biggest meltdown ever possibly and scherzer pitched 30 more innings and barely has more k's on a much better team.

None of this should matter if we are debating stats... Cueto and Bum can't help that their team sucked on their days off... Scherzer's team didn't help him get those K's...

The fact is, there were better pitchers this year, and that is not a slight to Fernandez.
