Wow, sad news to wake up to. Always remember him catching that Tulowitzki liner and then smiling back at him.

Woke up this morning pumped for some fantasy football and saw the bottom of the screen scroll past with something along the lines of Fernandez killed. I thought it couldn't be. No way Jose Fernandez is dead... Any player dying is a big deal but why this guy!? I mean his story makes you fall in love with him. Couple that with being good..really really really good. He was gonna be a great... The dude was such a positive. Life can be a bitch sometimes.

Rest in peace brother

Tragic. He was a good story.

A great article about him from Grantland a few years back:

Sometimes there are no answers to why things like this happens. By all counts he was an incredible guy on the field and even better off of it. To see someone who had fought so hard through adversity in life just pass at 24 years old is devastating.

Rest in peace. Baseball, Miami, and the world lost someone special

I don't follow baseball at all anymore, but for those guys saying he was a cy young candidate, any chance he wins this posthumously?

I'm down here on work and its hard to describe the link the guy had to the community- it was like Brees in New Orleans but much, much deeper (I can't really think of a good parallel- maybe Koufax with the Jewish community in Brooklyn)- this was a guy who basically represented a massive section of Miami, who embodied all that they identify as and now he's just suddenly gone, I mean its just really, really hard to emphasize how far beyond baseball he had bonded with Miami.

Man brought back memories of the Indians players who died in a boating accident. Man I remember ESPN focusing on that and how tragic it was.

Horrible. He had just announced a few days ago that his girlfriend was expecting

Maybe Gehrig or Clemente but they were mid and end career respectively. This is like if Lebron had died in a car wreck after the Pistons game. Just so, so much potential that no one will ever see-- at home he was the best pitcher in baseball by a pretty wide margin, hell 5 days ago he went 8, struck out 12 and gave up 0 runs against Washington.

Speaking of assholes you don't expect to show humanity- Dan LeBatard has been kind of amazing on this, the man genuinely seems like he's barely holding it together.

Even though he was older and not nearly as good as Jose, the first thing I thought of when I heard the news today was Darryl Kile. He was the first prominent big leaguer who I can remember passing away during his career. I vaguely remember Derrick Thomas's death but Kile's hit me hard because I really only cared about baseball when I was younger and he was a former Astro.

Damn. This is terrible. He was so fun to watch and so young into his career. I his family, friends, teammates and fans find comfort in his memory.

WTF?

LeBatard is basically literally the opposite of what you think, to a fault even.
