I agree, but not necessarily because of playing on more days but more so because of the safety procedures that are going to eventually be put into place.

How many of yal played football? I played from 8 yrs old through HS and can count on one hand the number of guys I know who got concussions. I can think of once or twice of having my bell rung but thats about it. With more info and awareness about it today than in previous years, the concussion problems can be greatly reduced. Plus its not until the college and pro ranks that the frequency of it becomes really major. Not saying it doesn't happen in HS and LL but not nearly as often as the college and pros.

You don't think increasing ratings is an indicator that the public wants more games? Thursday Night Football ratings increased 10% from '12-'13. So it's not as unpopular as some people want it to be.

If 10 people watched in 12 and 1 extra person watched in 13, that's a 10 percent increase. The increase could be just do to NFL Network being on more cable/satellite/Internet systems.

What are the Thursday ratings compared to Sunday night and Monday nights? That might be more telling. I don't know those numbers.

I'm an NFL junkie and I'd rather watch The Big Bang Theory over a Bills/Browns game at this point. It's Thursday night. I have other things to do. I'm not that addicted to NFL Football. And I don't even particularly like The Big Bang Theory.

This.

And I agree with him, but not about the timeline. I bet it declines in 10 years and really takes a turn in 20. I think this head injury trend has to be very troublesome to the NFL. They are trying so hard to prevent head injuries, they are hurting the product on the field substantially.

Humans and innately drawn to big hits. Its why people watch NASCAR for the wrecks and boxing for the knockouts. If they remove all the jawbreaking, headcrunching, neck snapping hits, they will turn this into a product not as many people want to see. Make the players sign waivers and let em kill each other IMO.

i think youd be surprised what might qualify as the type of hit that can produce damage, especially when repetitive.

And Goodell Responds:

Yeah, it's "for the fans." Not because you need new revenue streams. GFY Goodell. This is why Cuban might actually be right.

Absolutely spot on.
I'm a huge football fan but you can already see the bottom up trend as more parents are not letting their kids play football. Add to that, you are beginning to hear former players say they would not want their kids to play football either.
What is interesting to consider is what will happen to the facilities colleges are enlarging now. Most major programs are spending large amounts to enlarge stadiums and when attendance starts to decline, what will they do then.
I said some weeks ago, the Mike Anderson lawsuit is just the first for the college level. At some point, people will begin walking it back to the high school level. When that happens, school boards will have no choice but to cut back on football.
I'm not saying this is right, just reality as I see it.

I know this is true, and I hate all the new rules for hitting, but I don't really think about it or care while I'm watching a game. I enjoy the strategy and a simple, well fought game. Idc if there are neck snapping hits.

I played from the ages of 7-18. I only had one but it was a big one, happened in the 11th grade.

I threw a good block on a punt return but I didn't know about until I saw it a few days later when we were watching the game tape.

i do remember barfing a few times during the following days

but seriously, it did suck from what I remember. The coaches didn't even let me play in the last 2 games of the season. I practiced the last week and thought I was going to play but I got held out of the game. I was mad about it at the time but now looking back, I knew that it was for the best.

ended up having a better 12th grade year so at least I went out on a good note.

Luckily I never experienced anything like that. My lil brother is one of the few that I mentioned that I know that got one. He also was unable to finish out his senior season bc of it.

If you don't think the NFL will decline significantly with the direction it's going in then you're a fool.

So why is the NFL rising despite the direction it is going right now?

Cuban is a troll.

He better focus on getting his mavs out that 8th spot by hook or by crook before San Antonio breaks a big ole broom off in his arse

Think long-term. They're going to water it down so much it will turn fans off. The problems will come around a few years down the road....not presently.

exactly

and once the bottom falls out its not coming back to its current heights.

all anyone has to do is look at what happened to boxing.

It was once one of the power players in the sporting world.

now it has to fend off MMA to just be the top combat sport.

Football will never have the talent issue that boxing did because it is a team sport in a country with an abundance of freak athletes, and while you may disagree with some of the changes made to the game, it is nowhere near as fundementally fricked up in its business practices as boxing is and was.

In order to keep growing you have to tap into new markets and audiences, which is what they are doing.

But by doing this, you assume that your core audience--the most loyal, hard-up, can't EVER get enough of football audience--will stay forever and they take them for granted. This is where the NFL will lose at some point.

I'm one of those "core audience" NFL fans, and have already reached my breaking point. I didn't watch probably half of the Thursday Night games. I go to bed at halftime of most of the Sunday and Monday night games. I won't watch the second half of doubleheaders if involves the Cowboys, Jets, Patriots, or some other team I don't like. I haven't bought a piece of merchandise since the Saints won the Super Bowl. I don't watch the combine. I watch bits and pieces of the draft. I barely watch the NFL Network anymore because I'm sick of Hard Knocks and Hey Rookie marathons.

I admit I enjoy following free agency right now, but it's mostly on twitter and I don't watch any of it on television.

There was a time in the not too distant past where I couldn't imagine missing ANYTHING involving the NFL. Those days are LONG GONE.

And I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. When the hardcore fans like me realize that life goes on if you miss a game, THAT is when the slow decline begins. I finally realized that my loyalty makes me a chump in their eyes so I'm fighting back.

There could well be something to the notion that the Saturday night games are gonna oversaturate the market. I'd also be worried about Goodell's precious eighteen game regular season diluting the product.
