"I’m worried about the sport overall," he said. "I’m worried about the focus strictly on the playoff, that if you’re not one of the playoff teams, 'Why does it even matter, who cares? Let’s just opt out, let’s get ready for the NFL.'"

Speaking with former Michigan All-American Jon Jansen, Herbstreit said the fixation with the College Football Playoff is detracting from the sport at large.

"Even when you played, which wasn't all that long ago, imagine playing at Michigan and let's just say you’re 8-3 or 9-2 but you’re not in the playoff race. Part of my sensitivity to the world we live in is, that’s BS," Herbstreit said.

Look at Iowa, said Herbstreit. The Hawkeyes started this season 0-2 as questions swirled about a lawsuit levied against the university by a group of former players and about the future of head coach Kirk Ferentz. They've since won four games in a row.

"To me, that’s one of the great stories of college football (this year) and we live in this era of, 'Does it have anything to do with the playoff? Nope, OK, who cares.' And if that's the world we’re going to live in in college football, that’s like March Madness," said Herbstreit. "If you’re in March Madness, fill out the bracket and we’re gonna get excited. But do you care about the NIT? No, unless it’s maybe your school.

"That’s what college football's turning into with this playoff. If you’re in the playoff, it’s March Madness, and if you’re not in the playoff -- even if you’re 9-2 -- good riddance. Kids are opting out of Rose Bowls, kids are opting out of Sugar Bowls. It’s like, what in the hell is happening to our sport.?

quote:

"We're now in a world (in college football) where it’s all about three and done, three years and the NFL. There aren’t a whole lot of jobs up there," he said. "The odds of making it are slim, the odds of sticking around for five years or longer are even slimmer. And yet our system is basically teaching these players, 'You gotta look out for you. These coaches don’t care about you, you gotta take care of you. Everyone else is making money and you’re not making any money.'

"I’m worried that we’re raising a generation of players that aren’t getting into that rich soil of a program and realizing the benefits of being part of a program. They just look at it like, 'Where am I gonna go? Michigan, Ohio State, whatever, I’m just looking for a springboard to the NFL.' And I think that’s really an unhealthy place to be," he said. "But you got agents, you got a lot of outside voices that are getting in these players’ ears and getting them excited about money and the NFL

Look at your employer, Kirk. ESPN is one of the main culprits, pushing the playoff or bust narrative and corporate culture on college football.

not just college football, it is the sports culture we've created. You either win it all or you suck that is the mentality. in fact now, it is not just win it all, it is win it all IMMEDIATELY or you suck.

Playoff system sucks and rewards the top 4 or 5 teams. Parity basically disappeared overnight

To remedy these issues, I would allow players to make money in college by profiting off of their own name, image and likeness. If you still think college football is all about amateurism these days, especially at big programs, I don't know what to tell you. But the NCAA lives that lie. I would also expand the playoff so more people have a shot. The NFL and high school ranks all have double digit team playoffs and they seem to do fine, I don't know why that's still such a foreign concept for college football.

I mean...he’s right. But he works for an organization that pimps the playoffs over everything else. Talk to tour bosses dude.

He’s 100% correct. True CFB fans saw the trend starting with the BCS. The obsession with crowning a national champ has taken away some of the excitement.

CFB became popular because of regional rivalries. My team is better than yours. We have the trophy in our case. We have a better fight song. Etc. Yay, we won the Big Ten and are going to Pasadena. Sweet, we won the SEC and are tasting the Sugar.

All of that has been diminished because unless you are near the top of Tuesday’s rankings, it doesn’t matter. That attitude has filtered from the media, to the coaches who bailed on teams, and now to players.

I don’t disagree with him, but I have to ask...
Did he cry?

I wanted to disagree with him but he hit the nail on the head.

Edit: I am picturing him saying all of this in tears.

I have zero fricks to give.

College football is BIG BIG business, nothing more. The last thing on anyone's mind (other than the fans) is the integrity of the sport.

You understand that this is happening, correct?

I agree with Herbie and I've said it for a long time. There isn't just one team that has a successful season each year.

He is wrong on one point though. Ohio State has a program called Real Life Wednesdays. It helps to prepare players for life after football whether that is after an NFL career or after an Ohio State career. It's wildly successful and seems to be one of the reasons that many players families (and players) choose Ohio State. I presume other schools have similar programs. I believe Urban Meyer started something similar at Florida but I could be mistaken on that.
