"Just look at the list of teams playing. It takes two. It's not just one good team. You have to have two to have a great game, and there's not a lot of great games. And we're spreading it out more and more with fewer good teams, which makes it doggone impossible to have good games. If the games aren't good, that's part of it. Now there are other things: the millennials, iPhone, and the stuff people do as they live differently.

"Something has to be done about Thursday-night football. It just doesn't work. It's not only a fan thing — it's a team thing. It's a safety thing. It's a competitive thing. It doesn't work. I know about money, and I know about business. Maybe you have to tweak stuff a little more. To help teams, maybe you get a bye the week before."

I think you combine that, with making out the TV schedule BEFORE the season even starts, as the main reasons.

A game can look good on paper before the year, then when you get to it in November if those teams have struggled, forget TV ratings.

Never understood that myself, why not do it like the SEC/ESPN ~2 weeks before the games you announce TV. Assures you at least a decent matchup.

Can't do a bye week before the Thursday games bc then you'd have to have bye weeks every week of the season. Wouldn't mind Seeing all Thursday games eliminated except for thanksgiving.

Yea my favorite team is the Jags. I stopped watching Jags games this season.
My second favorite team is the browns. I won't watch them til week 15, just to find out if they go 0-16 or not.
But right now i do enjoy watching the Raiders and Cowboys. I hope thats the SuperBowl matchup, and hope THE Raidas win it all.

I really have no interest any other teams unless they have a fantasy player of mine, but I don't watch a lot of those games.

Putting the browns or Titans on prime time games is just silly as well

The only requirement for most people in a game is that it is close and exciting. It could be junior high teams playing and if it comes down to the last second, people will say it was a good game. The Raiders vs Texans was 7-2 against 6-3 and it was a competitive game. I found it enjoyable, but people seem to bitch about any game that doesn't have the Cowboys, Steelers, or Patriots involved.

He's exactly right, any idiot that thinks it's because of the players not standing during the national anthem need to turn of Fox News.

For a while, wasn't the TH/Sa Night Football, the last few weeks of the season in December (I could be wrong)? I agree otherwise to cut back on the Thursday games.

As for Madden, don't find anything he said all that wrong.

1. get full time refs that actually know what they're doing instead of deciding the outcome on the last drive.

2. get rid of TNF outside of opening night and thanksgiving

100% guarantee improved ratings.

Horrible calls that decide games, and somehow confirming those calls after seeing the replay has got to stop.

Inconsistency in calls. This is not only a referee issue, but a rule wording issue too. You shouldn't have announcers and serious fans openly admitting they don't know what a catch is, or what pass interference is. Both of which have huge yardage implications and sometimes determines the outcomes of games.

You need to eliminate the automatic first down penalties. This ticky-tac hands to the face on 3rd and 25 is just dumb.

Start fixing these issues and I guarantee ratings go up.

The degree of difficulty of scoring a TD with under a minute left in the game is at an all time low.

It cheapens the game. It's almost like arena football.

Another issue is that the game is simultaniously over and under exposed. They seriously need to revise their regional broadcasting format. There is no reason why there should be 4 games going on at the same time, but one is only able to watch 1 without spending a ton of money on NFL Sunday Ticket. With College Football, if there are 4 games on TV, I can flip between 4 games. It means that even though College Football has a greater percentage of truly unwatchable blowouts, I'm never stuck with them. I can always pick the best game, resulting in a better experience.

So there's 8 games playing in one time slot and 3 games playing at the next time slot, and I only can watch 3 total games? That needs to change.

This. It seems like no matter how big the lead is earlier in the game, between bad pass interference calls and worse defense, the game always comes down to the last possession. It's worthless.
