They were like ND, only able to be good when cheating was rampant

One guy doesn't speak for the Nebraska fan base. You'd be hard-pressed to find many that don't want Scott Frost.

Agreed. Sadly, they have yet to rebound from that mistake. Credit to Pelini in that he had Nerbaska on the verge of being back, just could never get over the hump.

They were nowhere close to being “back”. Pelini’s ceiling was losing in conference championship games. And it’s not like those losses occurred with a national title berth on the line for them.

That 2009 team was really good. They weren't going to blow you out - the offense and Zac Lee weren't powerful enough, but they could play with most in the country. That defense was incredible.

It all started when they fired Frank Solich, a perennial 10 win coach.

They're right where they deserve to be.

Nebraska doesn't produce enough athletes in-state to be competitive. Back in the 70s and 80s they were able to get players from other states, many of them. As other schools put more resources into football, their recruiting dried up.

The rise of schools like Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Wisconsin, etc has hurt Big Red

3 losses going into the big 12 championship game, ranked #21. That’s as close as pelini came to “being back”, and that was his 2nd or 3rd year. Still a far cry from the Nebraska of yesteryear.

Eta- just looked up pelini’s record at Nebraska. 4 losses every single year, with the exception of one 9-3 season. I’ll give him credit for being consistent, but that’s about it. They’d obviously reached their ceiling with him.

It's all about coaching. We'll see how Frost does next year.

Every football coach I know will say it not about the X's and O's but it's the Jimmy's and Joe's.

Big 10 is wealthier and more stable, but I still with Neb was back in the Big 12. Along with Missouri. Just seemed right.

This. Also, leaving the Big 12 hurt Nebraska’s ability to recruit in Texas. Without that pipeline, they’re just another great plains team in an unexciting location. They’re just an old name that’s lost its luster.
