nah

no longer being able to stack their team with partial qualifiers and "walk ons" who got locally awarded scholarships killed them.

even if that was still allowed they would never survive the media firestorm from keeping complete POS scumbags like Lawrence Phillips on the team.

They had those conference championships before the Big 8 existed. Nebraska has ALWAYS been a powerhouse. They were winning since the beginning of the 20th century and were even ranked top 10 in the first AP poll in 1936

From 1960-2001, there was no program more consistently good than Nebraska. Yeah...they kind of struggled against elite competition, but they only ever finished outside the AP Top 15 seven times in that span. 42 seasons and they only finished outside the AP Top 15 seven times, and only once under Osborne. Think about that for a second. Now look where they are now. They are a mere shadow of their former selves.

Hard to fathom Osborne losing 7 Bowls in a row.

No kidding. From '81 to '93, they lost 10 of 13 bowl games, including those 7 in a row. That's unbelievable.

They should have never left the big 12 and all their Texas recruiting ties

Blue bloods have down periods but they never stay down. Nebraska's extended mediocrity is not unprecedented among blue bloods

I don't think Frost is their man. They need a stud defensive coach(should look at the NFL) and they need to break the bank on assistants.

I think someone like Mike Vrabel would be a good fit.

I work with a Nebraska alum. They want Les. "Big name". WTF??

Depends on expectations. If they are happy at 8-4 then Les might be their guy. Not sure anyone other than maybe Saban, Dabo, or Urban could make that an elite program again.

They were nowhere close to being “back”. Pelini’s ceiling was losing in conference championship games. And it’s not like those losses occurred with a national title berth on the line for them.

Nebraska's ceiling is Wisconsin which is playing in Rose Bowls when the Big 10 is in the CFB Playoff or winning the conference when the Big 10 is down. But like Wisconsin, they'll never truly be elite. Wisconsin is very successful but they're never in the national championship conversation in late November and December. They're always a borderline top 10, top 15 team year after year. That's basically Nebraska's ceiling.

I think Charlie McBride hanging it up was the real culprit of Nebraska's decline. Not slighting Tom Osborne, but Solich was fit to run that style of offense.

I first noticed a significant decline in 2000 - most notably on the defensive side of the ball. Charlie McBride had just retired following the 31-21 Orange Bowl win over Tennessee.

2000
The quality and talent simply wasn't there. Nebraska went into Norman as #1 and was housed to the eventual national champion Sooners 31-14. Josh Heupel had a field day against their secondary. They lost another one to K-State that year.

2001
The next year, I'm sure we all remember Nebraska getting massacred in Boulder and then the National Championship blowout against Miami. Colorado and Miami could have named the score. Nebraska should have been thankful that Miami let up after the first half.

2002
This was the full on decline. Nebraska lost Crouch and went 7-7 that year. They were annihilated at Penn State, at Iowa State, at Kansas State, and against Colorado. They kept it close, but still lost, to Texas, Oklahoma State, and Ole Miss.

2003
Craig Bohl was eventually fired and Pelini was brought in. The 2003 team played better, but was still beaten very badly against Texas and Kansas State.

Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Colorado certainly didn't suck.

This. Also, leaving the Big 12 hurt Nebraska’s ability to recruit in Texas. Without that pipeline, they’re just another great plains team in an unexciting location. They’re just an old name that’s lost its luster.

Tired old crutch of an argument. Nebraska and Oklahoma were dominant blue bloods back in old Big 8 which had no presence in Texas. This whole Big 12/Texas thing is way overblown.

Nebraska is still able to land highly ranked recruiting classes based solely on their name. The issue they have is bad coaching. The ranked classes they do bring in do not receive good player development and gameday coaching, schematics, and game planning is poor.

If Nebraska gets a good coach they will be back.

Yeah, they will bring Frost home. Will that immediately change their freefall? Anyone's guess.

Nope. He's a poor fit for Nebraska.

Laugh all you want, but as an Iowa fan, I do not want Bielema ending up in Lincoln. He could do some real damage there with the style of play he likes. He's not a good fit at Arkansas, it's not working out there, that doesn't mean he's a bad coach, it's just a bad fit.

You think? I'm not one of these guys who thinks that just because the school is located in Lincoln, they can't be successful. I've been told they've got tremendous facilities and I know they have a passionate fanbase and history. They can get recruits there.

Look at Dantonio at Michigan State. Do you think recruits are just drooling over East Lansing? Plus, they are second fiddle to Michigan and Ohio State.

A good coach can turn just about any program around (see Brohm at Purdue, Fleck at Minnesota, Cutcliffe at Duke).
