Looks like most sat at least a half or full season. 4 of the top 5 sat.

no. QBs traditionally sat 2-3 years

Maybe QBs altogether, but not 1st rounders. Of the 16 first round QB selections in the 1970s, 12 started at least 5 games in their rookie season.

Yeah Watson seems to be struggling coming from the spread.

Vince Young and RGIII were both rookie of the year winners. They were each out of the NFL within 5 years. I wouldn't judge a QB on how he performs in year 1. NFL defenses have a way of figuring guys out very quickly

he also comes from the old school WCO where QBs were supposed to sit for 2-3

McNabb is the exception, but the lack of that development likely led to his career-long issues throwing the ball

I can not think of a QB in the top tier that did not sit his first year.

Guys who I know sat
Ben--Maddox
Brady--Bledsoe
Brees--I forgot who it was in SD
Rodgers--Favre
Eli--Warner

Peyton seems to be the exception to the rule. Possibly Wilson, depending on what you want from a QB.

Cutler sat I think?

Manning, Elway, Big Ben and Fran Tarkenton are really the only top tier guys who started early in their rookie season. Everybody else either sat for a good chunk of their rookie season or didn't start at all.

Didn't Big Ben sit for 7 games?

Wilson is top tier in my opinion, he did not sit. Wilson caused one of the biggest melts in MSB history also.

Right? If the NFL wants a league to develop their players for them, they can create a developmental league themselves.

yeah, and no one will watch it

No, the Ravens knocked out Tommy Maddox in the second game of the season. Ben started the rest of the games.

And McNabb didn't even make his first start until 10 games into his rookie season. The QBs today are starting from day one or by early October which is ridiculous.

Or you get David Carr who bascially got murdered in Houston and never recovered.

that came to mind as well...but expansion team is a one off for this kind of thing. I actually thought he was better than eli when he was a backup for the giants 8 years ago.

long story short, you'll find it's a wash.

Not a surprise. Andy Reid is one of the brightest and smartest coaches in the NFL for a reason.

Which is interesting considering McNabb made 12 appearances and 6 starts his rookie year.

Smith is going to come down to Earth as late as the beginning of 2018. I doubt Reid pulls the plug on him this year because he has the benefit of the doubt with his amazing start.

I love how everyone hates on Smith, yet he has done nothing to warrant this line of thinking. You can say the Kaep stuff in San Fran possibly, but if you remember they switched the offense for Kaep. In KC they are building the offense around what Smith does.

I think so to an extent. It is making picking a QB more difficult than ever.

Watson and Dak are outliers. Although I can see how a guy who is used to running a spread can step easily into a pro style passing game. Just depends. Everybody runs a spread. But is the QB making 3-4 reads or is it like Jordan Jefferson and making 0-1 reads. Just throwing quick slants and bubble screens with the occasional post?

Another major NFL hurdle is knowing when and how to run. Taking needless shots are the death of many RPO guys already.

Drafting Mahomes is exactly what warrants this line of thinking. Your point about his quality of play is not incorrect, though.

The NFL could invest in a true farm developmental league like MLB if they were actually interested in improving their product instead of relying on college athletics to do it for them.

No, gimmick systems have hurt the NFL.

Majority of College Qb's can only make 2-3 reads a best:

#1, #2, dump 2 hot wr/rb

If anything the transition is shorter than ever now.

This.

How short people's memories are.

Guys never used to start right away. Now a lot of them are rocking it right away.

Carson Palmer was in a Pro style offense in college and he sat on the bench for an entire year "to learn" and study the NFL game. He didn't take a single snap in a game. And it's not like he was behind Joe Montana on the depth chart, he was behind John Kitna.

Winston started right away and had a great rookie season.

Andy Dalton started right away and had a great rookie season.

Luck, Ryan, Wilson, Cam, RGIII, etc.

All the best rookie seasons in history besides Dan Marino all happened within the last 10 years.

You could say it's NEVER been easier to play QB in the NFL coming straight from college than it is now.

College football highlights are ruining high school coaching which ruins the development of pro qb skills, it's a vicious cycle.

No, but it is certainly ruining OL play.
