well public and private schools are all together for sports. it just goes by size of school for class differences. just so happens that his school was kinda small and in one of the middle classes, so your point still stands.

again the premise of this thread is about let downs and not straight up busts.
Right, but it's not just letdowns...it's largest letdowns. Do I think Reggie's career has been somewhat of a letdown based on the hype? Of course. But when I see "largest letdown," I'm thinking guys at the top of that list. And as much as I hate him, I don't think he belongs there. It was impossible to live up to his hype, but like someone else said, people questioned Reggie as a #1 RB from the start, so how can that really be a letdown that he never panned out as a #1 guy?

with RW you can at least say when he wanted to turn it on, he was among the best backs in the league

the worst letdowns can't have had a full career
they were just never able to play... that is IMO you aren't as bad of a failure if you have the talent to at least be a real pro (vs you just couldn't compete)

IIRC, he was productive, injuries just did him in.
I'd go with someone like Kerry Wood. Had the hype, had the quick great start and then has been alright since. Never was a stud.

He still had plenty of people supporting him as an every down back then. Gale Sayers was a name mentioned in comparison to reggie. At worst people saw him as a 1,000 yd rusher, 1,000 rec yds, and a dynamic returner. He hasn't even really been close to that guy.

i agree, Bush has been a small let down, but shouldnt be mentioned with any of these other guys

Tracy McGrady?

How about Jamal Reynolds and Vernon Gholston? Two guys who flat out sucked in the NFL and were considered legit college stars on high profile teams.

small? So as the #2 overall pick in the draft you would say you sort of expected to get an injury prone 3rd down back who occasionally returns punts?

Football its Russell and Leaf in a league of their own.

Right. Solid. A lot of people thought he could be a bust. They just didn't think they had enough on him. He was drafted on potential.

Better than anything Rubio put up before he was drafted. Same with Jennings and most of the other Euros who flourished in the NBA.
Rubio could end up being on this list after he gets to the League

i don't think that's the case at all.
If someone hypes you as potentially one of the future GREATEST 20 PLAYERS OF ALL TIME and you end up being a journeyman but playing 10 seasons.
I find that to be just as good a disparity in hype as...
Being a #1 pick with a bullet and being out of the league in 10 years.
In some ways, it's greater. because top draft picks fail all the time. But you don't hear too many people throw out potential GOATs.
Reggie was considered a potential all timer coming out.

this is not a bust thread. This is a letdown thread.
Hype to Production Bush absolutely should be on this list.
he might have produced more than these guys, but he was also hyped WAY more than these guys too.

Ming Yao has been a pretty substantial letdown
Posted on 3/23/11 at 12:07 pm to Rouge
David Carr and Alex Smith can be added to this list.

Disagree. He's been a multi time All Star. and has been All NBA when he's healthy. When healthy, top 10 player in the league.
Greg Oden better pick for that. Considering he's played 80 of a possible 360 games, and has never averaged a double double.
As for football. How about Maurice Clarett? His freshman year Ohio St. hype was INSANE. and then he fricked it up, got drafted in the 4th round and barely even played a game in the League.
