Yeah, I think his ceiling will be a top bench player for the US national team.
Speaking of soccer flops, how about Denilson? From being the most expensive player in the world at 19 to playing in the Vietnamese league at 32

I can't think of his name but who was the guy drafted before Michael Jordan to the trailblazers I think.
Bowie

Prior at least put in some really good years before his elbow and shoulder blew up.
Strasburg is well on his way to being in this debate

Basketball: Ralph Sampson.
He was projected to be the next great center. He had a decent career at Houston, but Olajuwon was the starting center after being drafted the following year.

His U-20 numbers, which I can't find right now, were really good. He was killing it at that level. If I remember correctly, when Enes Kanter averaged 20 and 14 at the last U-20 Euros, they said the only player with comparable numbers was Darko.
And all of the draft analysts thought Dumars made the right choice in that loaded 2003 draft.

Bush has been at least mediocre to average and he does not face the pressure of being a franchise QB.
Bush was widely regarded to be one of the best RB prospects of the last 20 years when he came out. He was a heisman winner and a can't miss. His HYPE was out of this world.
And he's gone from that to NEVER being the feature back in his own offense. And never cracking 1000 yards.
quote:
Adam Morrison was not exactly expected to be all-world, but yes he was a letdown, but not a huge letdown.
Morrison called: The next dirk. The next bird. The next Maravich. The great white hope.
Selected THIRD overall, he is not even on an NBA roster right now.

Called the next 300 game winner. The next great pitcher. Injured. Never worth anything again.

Also, none of these guys were the first pick in their respective draft that year, which makes them marginally less of a letdown.
So to be a let down with regard to hype, you have to be the #1 overall pick?

Robert Lane - QB who committed to Ole Miss is '03. Some scouts had him ranked ahead of JaMarcus Russell and Chris Leak coming out of HS. Only played 2 seasons at QB then was moved to TE where he effectively disappeared.

I was coming to post Leaf since I forgot to put him in my first post. Good call on Jamarcus.
But Reggie? No way. He's been a contributor on a World Champion team, and teams have to adjust for him on every play. He didn't turn the NFL on its head by any means, but he certainly isn't one of the largest letdowns...and I fricking HATE Reggie Bush.

So many brazilians have been flops. Another American soccer player, Lee Nguyen.

(2002-03):
the decent league he was in:
quote:
Through 20 games, he was playing 20 minutes per game, averaging 9.5 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 blocked shots. He was shooting 49 percent from the field and 68 percent from the line.
The shitty league he was in:
quote:
Saw more playing time in the North European Basketball League (NEBL), a competition against other top European clubs. In 10 games (team went 6-4), averaged 14.2 points and 7.0 rebounds. Scored 21 points in a victory over Greek power PAOK. Tallied 23 vs. PAOK in the losing rematch. Exploded for 37 points in a victory over Skonto (Latvia).
Also, despite the darko hype, most people thought dumars was crazy for passing on Melo.

some of these suggestions seem to be more busts than let down career types

Greg Oden, hasn't even hardly played.

again the premise of this thread is about let downs and not straight up busts. Reggie has been a massive let down when you consider what he was supposed to bring to the table. His defenders can really only use the decoy line and a playoff game against arizona to defend him.
Reggie was supposed to turn the NFL on its head and be a human highlight reel. He's gotten more press for banging a reality show celeb than he has for his on the field play though.

Sampson was ALL NBA 2nd team in his 2nd year. And took the Celtics to 6 games in 1986. For all purposes that Rockets team was on the verge of a dominant run until he got injured, and then traded to the Warriors.

Oh I know. Thats gotta be a letdown for Portland right?

thread is about hype vs returns. Reggie's hype was so huge coming out. HUUUGE. he hasn't been a flat out bust. But no way he even came close to his hype.
Here's another one.
How about Ricky Williams? He's had a productive career at times yes. But his hype was once so great that a coach traded his whole draft for him. And people applauded it.

Two more basketball players to add to the list: Shawn Bradley and Felipe Lopez.
Where did you find Darko's stats? I couldn't find them Those are pretty solid for European A league play. Better than anything Rubio put up before he was drafted. Same with Jennings and most of the other Euros who flourished in the NBA.
