How did the Cardinals get the "best fans in baseball" label?

Admittedly I'm not the biggest pro baseball guy, but it seems like that fan base is insufferable from an outsiders point of view.

Their team got really hot and bandwagoners got labeled as good fans
Let them deal with a few 100 L season and then talk to me

Didn't they buy the rights from Tampa?

I went to a Cubs/Cardinals game two years ago in St. Louis. I'm a huge Cubs fan and was dressed in my Cubs gear. My GF accidentally bought tickets to the game on the following night and we only had reservations thru the night we were at the park, so we looked for tickets. A Cards fan sold us his two tickets in the lower level right behind the Cardinals dugout for $50 total. He then bought us beer when he showed up next to us in the other two seats. He was a good dude.
But all the rest of those mongrels were a disaster.

They have/had some pretty shitty posters on this board, but fwiw I've never had a bad experience with any in person. Games in Stl have a great atmosphere, always have a good time there

Every fanbase of a successful franchise is insufferable to outsiders. Cardinals fans are no worse than any other fanbase and, in fact, are very welcoming of visiting team fans.
The Best Fans in Baseball has blown up in the media and was a creation therefrom. The truthfulness of it matters little, though I will say that Cardinals fans tend to be lifers and tend to know about the team and the game quite a bit. St Louis is very much a baseball town.

Good marketing and "first mover" status.
Much like the Cowboys are "America's Team" because that label was applied to them on a large scale first.

I seriously hate this kind of argument.

Just follow @bestfansstlouis on twitter to see how great these fans are.

It's pretty easy to see how they got that label. They're one of the few cities where baseball is clearly the #1 game in town. I would say Boston and New York are the only other cities where baseball is #1 and those fans are well-known for being overly obnoxious and critical of their team. Also, their players seem to have a very close-knit bond with the community that's unlike any in baseball. I would say the only professional American sports franchise that is more intrisically linked to the community than the St. Louis Cardinals is the Green Bay Packers.
