Good marketing and "first mover" status.

Much like the Cowboys are "America's Team" because that label was applied to them on a large scale first.

Truer words have never been spoken.

It's all marketing and branding. Label yourself something in the media and repeat it/trademark it until it gains traction. Ignore it. It's just a label.

Why was Michael Jackson "The King of Pop?" Was there am election?

Why was James Brown "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business?" I don't remember anybody doing a study or measuring it.

Anybody can label themselves anything. LSU could start calling Johnny Jones "The Vince Lombardi of College Basketball" and the Sunshine Pumpers would start putting it in their sigs. Doesn't mean that it's true, though.

There's no such thing as "best fans" I was as die hard an astros fan through the 90 and up past the world series in 2005. We were good, it was fun to watch. Did I quit watching when the team went to trash and intentionally began tanking??? Yes I absolutely quit, why would I invest time in a team thats not even investing in putting a good product on the field. Today the astros are back and so am I. The cardinals have been blessed to not really have to go through a full rebuild bc of great drafting and free agent signings by the front office. When the cardinals hit that patch the astros went through, and it will come, the "best fans in baseball" will be really tested, I guarantee you that much. There won't be sellouts all the time......the braves are going through this period right now, hell even the cleveland indians had some sellout streak in the manny ramirez, albert belle and jim thome days and that vanished when they got bad.

I would say the only professional American sports franchise that is more intrisically linked to the community than the St. Louis Cardinals is the Green Bay Packers.

meh, there are other franchises like that, most of them being in smaller markets that only have one professional team. The Memphis Grizzlies are linked to the Memphis community as much as any team I can think of. Because it's all Memphis has, and the team almost seems to take on the identity of the city the way they play. And you can even look at the players' tight-knit bond that you referenced. Marc Gasol, Mike Conley, Zach Randolph, and Tony Allen have all signed extensions over the past 3-4 years to stay in Memphis, which generally wouldn't make any sense whatsoever for a player like Marc Gasol.

They're a bunch of try hards, like LSU baseball fans. Love patting themselves on the back.

Exactly. And I don't even hate the Cards. Prefer the Royals, but I've been to Busch Stadium and had a great time hobnobbing with their fans.

It's all about a tagline/identity that will stick when it comes to sports teams/fans. I'm a Cowboys fan, so I'm biased when it comes to the "America's Team" moniker, but the truth of the matter is, whenever ANYone hears that term, the Cowboys is the team they think of first.

Same goes for "best fans in baseball" and the Cards. It doesn't have to be objectively correct (can even be a bald-faced lie), but if it sticks, you run with it like it's going out of style if you're that organization.

we all got together before games, sung kumbaya, while giving and accepting reach arounds.

St. Louis is the home of The Baseball Bible...The Sporting News. It was way before the invention of TV. It first went into print in 1886.

The St. Louis Browns later became the Baltimore Orioles. But the Cardinals remained.

I don't think TSN still exists but it was must reading back in the day.

YESSSSSSS! BOOK IT!

Cubbies dominance for years to come

Also, it's baseball, they play 162 games a year. If anyone gets aggressive over a single regular season game, that person is an a-hole and needs to chill the eff out.

Cards baseball fans are like Redwings fans. Not hard to claim being a lifelong fan when they've been good your entire life.

Nah jk, I really don't know for sure but I know our fans have a rep for not really booing opposing teams/players very often unless they do something really bad from our perspective (ex: Brandon Phillips). It is also said that fans in the stands have a deep appreciation for good baseball even if it's from the other team. That's certainly up for debate but these are the things I've heard

ETA: this strictly applies to ppl who attend the games btw, not necessarily to asshats on message boards

Worse is everyone jumping on the bandwagon of self-labels.

Stop the nation building.

Once there was Raider Nation started in the 1970's.

That was it.

Then everyone started building nations...Red Sox Nation was coined in the late 90's by the Boston Globe.

And then you got Patriot Nation under BB.

Now most teams have some sort of nation even if briefly mentioned in a sports recap.
