For that amount of money I would have hoped on a plane and hedged in Vegas. Multiple casinos, all bets under whatever the IRS reporting limit is.

Assuming this guy had the funds to do that though. He only bet 5. Who knows if he had 40k in liquid funds.

Most people don't but he could have easily either had people loan him the $, I would loan someone the $ for a day to get a 2-3% return, or he could have found someone in Vegas that had cash and sold them his sportsbook.com account.
