unless it falls under an exception to that rule right?

When you can't do either, do what's fair. That's where the majority of golf rules come into play.

I only play recreational golf.

We move the ball.

Nobody cares.

We don't claim to be pros or bonifide amateurs.

I play occasionally and never take it seriously. It is fun to scramble with my Dad and brother.

I have played the ball "down". Most of the time it was no big deal.

I would never make a friend hit off of a rock or root in a round of golf. You can save that for the US Open.

One of the many rules of golf that I hate. But how do you fix it? Lift clean and place in the fairway? I mean it's really not an overly difficult shot to play. Ben Martin didn't have too much of a problem with it on the 72nd hole of the John Deere.

That's because there are professional caddies replacing sod and filling divots. The pro's usually end up in shallow divots filled with sand/soil and that's why it's rarely an issue.

IMO it's just another archaic rule that will keep people disinterested in golf. It's no fun to play from divots, deal with spike marks, stroke and distance for out of bounds, etc. Golf needs to either concede that it will always be a niche sport or modernize and simplify to appeal to a wider audience.

For the record I love golf and would love for someone to invent a golf course design that eliminates wasted time and forces people to keep play so I could play in less than 4 hours. It becomes impossible to play after you have kids and you are forcing your spouse to be a single parent for a huge chunk of the weekend.

weekend golfers should never hit out of a divot (i certainly don't) ... if i'm in a footprint in the bunker, i move the ball ... i don't play tournament golf, though ... assumed everyone was talking about pros ... archaic rules aren't the reason more people aren't playing golf ...

probably would pay 30 % more in monthly dues to see 3 1/2 hrs rounds the norm on the weekend, tho ... don't really see why 3 hr rounds can't be the rule ...

John Daly once said if he could change any rule in golf that hitting your ball in the fairway and landing in a divot should be ruled at ground under repair and you should be entitled to a free drop. Take it from a PGA professional, this isn't just a bitch from us amateurs.

This right here. This is my life long battle. A 2.5 year old and an 8 month old at home.... Wife is not a fan of me spending 1/2 the weekend at the course.

Son. I trashed a 4 iron punching out from under a tree. Keeping a 4 iron isn't worth losing my dignity

Did the same with a 7iron.

You can put a price on an S4Hundo with a fresh Z cord.

Getting a Momma's boy rep, or blasting an 88 when you're scratch......well.....frick that.

It's called the "rub of the green"

Jack Nicholas has said many times in the past he thinks it should be ground under repair.

I completely agree. Golf has too many "Just Plain Idiotic" carved in stone rules; however, play it as it lies is one of the most ludicrous in my opinion. Just as you've noted, the golfer hits a fantastic straight as an arrow drive that just happens to land in a divot - which, itself is something that another golfer failed to repair after creating it. Congratulations on the good drive? No. You piss poor golfer shouldn't have hit the ball in the divot.

Play it as it lies is even more ludicrous in the typical Non-PGA level course where there's no one picking up leaves, fallen limbs, etc. before and after every round or where the aged mowing equipment leaves a sprig of weeds in an otherwise mowed fairway.

Well congrats because you never will. They are responsible for themselves. They hit off those or take a legal drop and a penalty stroke. It's really not that hard to figure out.

It's cost me a tourney before. I sprayed it out the divot 2 fairways over. I will punch someone if they move it out of a divot

Well, if you are playing with me you are taking a stroke penalty. Sorry, breaking the rules of the game doesn't help your friends become better golfers or better people for that matter.

I understand but there is only one way to play the game. I recommend you guys start playing like gentlemen and grow up.

I disqualified my own two-man team in a tournament, on the course. It was my club's tournament. I chaired the competition committee. I invited my a-hole ex-FIL to join my team. The rules were straightforward: both players on a team played all the way through on every hole. Combined team score tournament.

He yanked one off the tee out-of-bounds, refused to hit a provisional ball. When we got to his ball (which was 20' OB) he said that he'd just drop there. I told him this wasn't allowed and he acted huffy and said to stand back because that's where he was hitting from. I stood back and watched him hit, then one of the guys in the other cart came over and quizzically asked me, "what are you going to do?"

I told my EX-FIL (wasn't then) that right now he faced a 2 stroke penalty for hitting an incorrect ball, plus a one stroke penalty for going OB and he still had to go back to the tee. He tried to push me around in front of my members and tell me he wasn't going to go back and hit it and he was playing the ball he hit.

I just looked at the other guys, apologized and asked them to pick up my FIL's ball and return it to me later in the clubhouse and I'd be sure that he gets it back. Told them we were disqualified and left the course, taking him and his red face to his car and didn't talk to him again for almost a year after. He was an a-hole through and through.
