Because what will constitute a divot? Grass? Sand? No grass or sand? For the most part PGA players take advantage of the rules to their benefit. They would 100% use this to their advantage and get a preferred lie everytime it's close. Too many rules official calls would be used during a round.

This is why. All divots aren't cut and dry and what constitutes a fully repaired and playable divot? This would just become another gray area that people will bitch about.

Put it wherever you want.

That's what ole man does. He's a .2 handicap.

I would consider a ball in a divot not as bad as a ball next to a root. But if you don't want to hit a root you need to take a stroke.

Play the course as you find it and play the ball as it lies.

if you're next to a root, you're not on the fairway. this is the big issue with divots. we're talking about a ball hit in the fairway. Players get relief when their feet are on a sprinkler head, ground under repair, standing water, etc. And they get relief in these instances even when the ball is not in the fairway. Just because it's a rule doesn't mean it's a good or fair rule.

Just use that ole shoe wood and kick it over a bit when no one is looking.

it doesn't happen that often on tour and it's not that big a deal to overcome ...

Just play lift clean and place in the fairway all the time.

If it's OK sometimes, it's OK all the time.

That's because there are professional caddies replacing sod and filling divots. The pro's usually end up in shallow divots filled with sand/soil and that's why it's rarely an issue.

IMO it's just another archaic rule that will keep people disinterested in golf. It's no fun to play from divots, deal with spike marks, stroke and distance for out of bounds, etc. Golf needs to either concede that it will always be a niche sport or modernize and simplify to appeal to a wider audience.

For the record I love golf and would love for someone to invent a golf course design that eliminates wasted time and forces people to keep play so I could play in less than 4 hours. It becomes impossible to play after you have kids and you are forcing your spouse to be a single parent for a huge chunk of the weekend.

Ive worked with the PGA to help speed up play and was shot down multiple times. It's one of the reason I got out of the golf business. It's really easy to fix but nobody wants to because they think it will turn already country club golfers away.

see i don't even understand their logic with that. regular country club players don't always exactly follow the rules to a T

Most don't want to be sped up at all they will lose membership fees due to it. But we tried to make them realize the amount of new age golfers would actually equal or be greater than the loss.

what exact changes were you pushing to speed up the game? In my experience, people who actually play golf a lot understand the importance of pace of play. Changing the divot rule wouldn't really affect pace of play enough for it to be noticeable in tournament play, much less a regular round of golf. Or are you referring to changes in general outside hitting a ball lying in a divot?

Changes outside the divot. I was one of the ones who thought creating a divot rule was a bad idea.

I'm generally curious as to some changes you'd like to see.

Unless I'm playing in a tournament...the guys I usually play with always play the ball up. We're typically 10-18 handicappers and we just want to go out and enjoy a round on the course. The game is already tough as it is. JMO
