Can someone please give me a logical explanation as to why the PGA makes a player hit a ball out of a divot.

I don't buy the tough luck answer. You can't control the course being torn up during play. It's just stupid. Then again, they also still make players keep score.

You play the ball as it lies.

Not when it's lift and place. Still no logic.

you can move your ball from standing water on the fairway and in many other circumstances. i think it's a legitimate question. you should not be penalized for hitting your ball in the fairway because it happened to land where another guy took a shot

Because if you had to re-place balls by the book every-time a player hit a divot, your round would take 6 hours.

It's just part of the game.

Rule 13-1. General
"The ball must be played as it lies, except as otherwise provided in the Rules." (and it isn't otherwise covered in the rules, so there you go).

This explanation is just completely stupid. I think about and fret over hitting my ball out of a divot longer than it would take me to place it just an inch behind or to the side of a divot.

It really is a stupid oversight in the rules that a player does everything he's supposed to do, i.e. landing in and staying in the fairway, only to be penalized with a lie that was beyond the control of the player or the course designer. I play within the rules, but I don't know a single golfer that thinks that is a rule that adds to the fairness in the game.

Idk but if my ball is in a divot I move it. I don't hit the fairway enough as it is to penalize myself when I do

ETA: I have no problem with anyone I play with doing the same.

You can't repair spike marks on the greens either. It's a similar concept but you can repair pitchmarks which seems out of line with as it lies and as you find it.

No way to define divot. Abuse would occur.

I've never understood it. You are penalized for executing one of the main and most difficult objectives of the game, to hit the ball in the fairway. Unfortunately, it won't ever be changed despite the fact that it should be.

I got screwed in the 5th hole of a horserace tournament once on this. Ball was in a deep divot center of fairway. Almost impossible to hit. Ball went flying 45 degrees sideways. We made bogey and got 3rd place.

I agree with OP. You get relief from cart path, grand stands, casual water, etc. why not a divot?

You may penalize yourself in the long run if you don't play to your true handicap. Come tournament time, ask yourself this: If you're carrying a rating as a 12 handicapper, would you rather compete against other solid 12 handicappers or would you rather compete against players that "think" they're a 12 handicapper, but when they have to play by "the rules" suddenly are a solid 20 handicapper or more and they get themselves penalized for screwing up because of old "breaking the rules" habits?

I used to chair our club's tournaments, and when we held tournaments, they were strictly played by "the rules". People would get themselves disqualified who didn't normally play by the rules.
