200K is a drop in the bucket to a single school?

When you are looking at billion dollar budgets for the district, then yes, the gate from athletic events is a drop in the bucket. Even on a per school basis, you would have to assume that the percentages that the district sees is somewhat similar to the per school numbers.

Come on man, that can pay for four more teachers or whatever else the school decides.

Or two more coaches apparently. You just made my point for me.

I think you're looking at it the wrong way. It helps justify paying coaches more.

I don't think I am. I think the emphasis that some are showing toward high school sports is concerning considering the number of kids affected is vastly inferior to the number of kids that are affected by teachers.

This is the attitude I disagree with. Here's a newsflash Skippy, different jobs pay different wages. You don't get to determine how much of a disparity there should be between occupations. The market determines that. Not happy that Joe is making twice as much as you? Learn to do what Joe does. It's really that simple.

That's the same mindset that the Occupy Wall Street tards have. You don't need to make that much money! Give some to (insert fav group/profession/etc)! GTFO

Its a shite job really for a normal life style. Tons of hours are put into it.

This website has a broad reach. Can anyone shed light on what Indiana HS basketball coaches make? Basketball is to Indiana what football is to Texas so I was just wondering.

Some of these school districts are massive and have a large tax "pie" to cut from. Spend a million dollars on a stadium and then pay a guy $39,000 a year to field a team?

I'm surprised that anybody here is shocked at a 6-figure salary for some high school head coaches.

And to answer a question way up the thread, no high school head coaches don't teach a class. Unless they are in a small district or just LOVE to teach and want a class. But a dude getting paid 6-figures would probably be looked down on for teaching a class? Get your arse back to the gym and study tape!!!

A buddy of mine is a pretty decent high school DC and has had some head coaching gigs too. Just no success yet at a HC. Kind of like a high school version of Wade Phillips.

He's making probably $70-75k I bet for him to want to move. He will probably teach a class though. Or coach a second sport. Easy class or an easy assistant coach gig like track or baseball.

no one should be complaining about a hc making 6 figures, esp no one that's a member of tigerdroppings ... sec coaches make 40 times the highest professor at some schools ... hell, s&c coaches make 5 times the average, probably ... and there are plenty of other pay issues in public ed to get worked up over ... should a middle school pe teacher make the same as a high school physics teacher? ... if they have identical degree levels and the same yrs of experience, they will ... and for better or worse, coaches are the leaders of a group/org that serves as one of the main providers of community spirit ...

Yea, but they probably suck at that teacher role. The coaches who taught us in high school were MORONS.

One of those idiots tried to teach us that the Alps were an abbreviation for the Appalachian mountains. My comments awarded me the most intense paddling of my life. I deserved it, but still.

I understand that different jobs pay different wages, but when they fall under the same company (school district), you would expect the one that has more of an affect on clients (students)to be the one with the higher pay. Since this is not the case, I have every right to question it.

I can see that has rattled some nerves on this board. In just this thread I have been referred to as Skippy and Boss ... maybe someone will call me Champ soon.

Football is important in Texas. If you want people to send their kids to their school, you better have a successful program. They are worth every penny if they deliver, and deserve the criticism if they don't.

this.

when a high school football game is played and people go to it, they're getting impressions of the schools and their communities

some schools might have 20 fans, not much of a band, and get worked... what does that say about them to the outside world?

meanwhile others pack the stands, win, and it's a fun night out for everybody. if a community cares about high school football, they generally care about their school.

Anyone know if Texas coaches are required to teach as well?

I went to a 5A (now it goes up to 6A) Houston area high school. The head coach, who is most of the time also the AD (ours was not), was not required to teach a class. Our head coach did help out with the special needs classes though, but that was only part of the day and he did that by choice, not requirement. The OC and DC did teach classes, but only had to coach one sport, that being football. All of our other football coaches had to teach, and had to coach another sport in the spring, as well as football in the fall.
