Cleveland backed out.

Cleveland is out as a third-team trade partner in a possible Orlando-Brooklyn deal for Dwight Howard, sources tell Y! Sports.

The Magic have reopened Dwight Howard trade talks with teams beyond the Nets.
The Hawks are one team that has been in touch Orlando, but not considered "the best option."
In the proposed trade involving the Nets, Cavaliers and Clippers would exchange more than a dozen players with several of them needing to agree to sign-and-trades, along with picks.
Back to square one

If Brooklyn and Orlando are to make a deal for Howard in near-term, it will likely be a trade between the two teams, sources tell Y! Sports.
Magic could trade him somewhere else and get so much more than the Nets can give. The only problem is if Dwight pulls a CP3 and gives other teams with better assets cold feet because he says he will only sign an extension with certain teams.

If I'm one of these other teams I'd make him prove it. Especially since there is absolutely 0 way for him to get to Brooklyn via FA. With the change in the S&T rules the advantage to the team with the Bird rights is so massive I think its worth the gamble to make him actually walk for 25 mil less than the new "incumbent" team would be offering.

A possible replacement for Cleveland as a third team, the Bobcats, are "NOT in the mix," says a person familiar with Charlotte's plans.

Hawks will only take Dwight if he says he will stay for more than a year

The Magic were never gonna make this trade, this was done to pressure the Lakers to take a bad contract. It just backfired on them with the Lakers sitting back sipping Margaritas.

This. I wouldn't be surprised if Minny came in as a 4th team if the Lakers want to move Pau.

That is a great trade. This was the case all along IMO

What does Orlando get in return? Unless the Lakers are also moving Gasol, neither Houston or LA has much to offer...
Posted on 7/10/12 at 5:33 pm to MrPappagiorgio
Houston has quite a few young, promising, cheap players (Motiejunas, Lamb, Royce White) as well as Martin's expiring. They also have the cap room to take on one of Orlando's bad contracts.
The Lakers don't really have anything besides Bynum, but Bynum has claimed he would be interested in playing for Houston whereas Howard may be a poon and leave after this year. So for them it's a matter of whether they would want Howard and take that risk, or Bynum. Regardless, the Rockets have much better options for the Magic than the Nets.

Houston has picks and young players. Its a better package that they would get from NJ.

Rockets' position strengthened, sources say, by fact no team has yet offered Magic better pick than first-rounder via Toronto in Lowry trade

Are the Rockets really that dumb? If they do a straight trade with Orlando, there is no way Howard re-signs with Houston. So why are you wanting Howard for a year?

Even just a rental is better than where they are now. And he would be turning down an extra year plus $20m over the life of his next contract to walk away. I doubt he passes that up.
A few rookies and picks for at least a year of Howard? I would pull the trigger.
