McGregor’s assessment of the finish, which he attributed to fatigue after nearly 30 minutes of boxing, may be incorrect. That’s according to former ringside physician Darragh O’Carroll, MD, who praised Byrd for putting the brain before the brawn.

From his post on TONIC:

Byrd's calculation to call a stoppage was likely not based on signs of fatigue, but rather signs of traumatic brain injury. Ataxia, or dizziness and loss of balance, is one of the hallmarks of concussion, a type of mild traumatic brain injury. Fatigue may cause sluggish and slow movements, but does not cause the imbalance and poor coordination exhibited by McGregor in the 10th round. Being wobbly, in the setting of pugilistic trauma, will always be treated as the result of head trauma and not as fatigue. To let a fighter continue on would be grossly negligent.

A fighter who's alive.

More than one can say for boxers killed in the ring (unable to defend themselves) like Benny Paret, Jimmy Doyle, Davey Moore ,Kim Duk Koo,etc......or disabled like Gerald Mcllelland ,Michael Watson,etc.......The guy took 17 straight non answered punches to the head without defending himself .

Boxing is far older than UFC & understand sustained punches to the head , Dementia Pugilistica ( punch Drunkeness) & death in the ring.

I mean yeah, he was getting hit right before they waved it off and it made him wobbly.

But he was exhausted too.

This is stupid. He got hit in the head like 100 times. Of course he suffered head trauma. This isn't news.

There would have been no Gatti v Ward round 9 if this doc had his way. Hell, most fights would go only a few rounds.

Honestly the fight probably should have been stopped in the 9th when Gatti was against the ropes getting pummeled. Nobody would have protested a stoppage there.

Michael Rapaport said the same thing about people complaining about the stoppage.

We have over 100 years of history to judge the effects of boxing on the human body, and have set rules with that in mind. Organized MMA is only about 20 years old. We have no idea what the long term effects really are yet, and so to sit there and say that CM should have been allowed to take more punishment when he didn't need to, because the fight was over, is not only stupid but also disgusting.

Ref stopped it at the right time.

Another 10 seconds, Conor would have been knocked out

What a fricking stupid article.

No shite, it was a TKO.

Did the writer just learn about boxing because of the McGregor fight? Nobody stops a fight because somebody is pooped.

So like every fricking K.O. and most T.K.O.? Welcome to boxing author. They don't stop fights because someone is tired.
