They have been trying to get this done for a long time with no success. I guess a 700 million dollar stadium is a good reason to give the finger to all the people who vote against it whenever it comes up though.

Good. Right on par with the league. No way could Atlanta fill 50,000 regularly

2 questions....

has a team ever left a new ballpark so quickly?
and what happens to turner field?

i've never been to atlanta so i dont know the logistics, but it's crazy to think that a team would leave a ballpark so quickly.

Turner field is almost unanimously considered to be in a bad location and over sized. We simply do not fill it up for 75% of the season.

It's absolutely crazy that Atlanta has now determined the "useful life" for its sports venues to be something like 20 years.

As an in-town season ticket holder and fan who witnessed Game 6 against the Indians in '95, I absolutely hate this move. The stadium is about a 10 minute drive from my house and I would end up riding my bike to the stadium at least half the time I attended ball games with my girlfriend (yes, even through the so-called "ghetto" that is Grant Park). I know I am in the huge minority here, but if this plan comes to fruition I will promptly be giving up my season tickets.

I don't see at all how traveling to Cobb County during rush hour will make it any easier for fans to get to the stadium (I am considering fans traveling from across the metro area). As a previous poster stated, I am sure traffic studies have been done, but I just don't see how it would be any more convenient, especially for those going straight from work in downtown/midtown/buckhead.

I understand why the Braves would be interested and why 80% of Braves fans would support this move, but I don't want this to happen at all. To me, ballparks should be in an urban setting. I know downtown Atlanta is the not most desirable of destinations, but a bad-arse ballpark (which Turner Field is not at the moment) could certainly help spur positive development and change that reality.

I completely oppose this move and I know that most of my buddies who regularly attend ballgames do as well (they are in-town as well, however).

Private entities, including NBC and other Olympic sponsors, agreed to pay a large sum of the cost to build Centennial Olympic Stadium (approximately $170 million of the $209 million bill).

After the closing ceremony on Sunday, title to the stadium will pass to the Fulton County Recreation Authority, a city-county agency. But it will really be the Braves' domain, lock, stock and tchotchkes. The team will pay $23 million for various improvements, $500,000 in annual rent and $1 million a year through 2016 for capital costs.

I agree 100%. If teams are just going to bolt the minute their initial leases are up then they need to be locked in for longer.

I agree with you for the Dome. But Turner was gonna need some major renovations soon just to keep up with fan experience and even then it'd be stuck in a bad location with no surrounding attractions. So either spend money on a stadium in a bad location AND spend a ton trying to improve the area surrounding the stadium which hasn't improved on its own in 20 years.

I could see how someone who lives in the city could say this but then again you have to cater to your population that attends the games.

There's really only one flaw with this plan and it is traffic which isn't an impossible fix

Grant Park really isn't that bad of a neighborhood anymore.

The problem is that the Ted is in the middle of a bunch of vast parking lots with an interstate bordering it on one side. There was never any potential for growth right around the stadium. It's parking lots + residential.

I was more talking about immediate surroundings. Just nothing to do but tailgate in the lots. Which is fine if you drive. But not if you take MARTA.

Just not a great experience outside the stadium. Not even talking about "ghetto"-wise.

We always end up going in the game an hour early to drink and eat because we have nothing to do.

yea, it's parking lots then houses. no room for anything to build up unless they demolish some houses
