They won't go to 8 unless all of the P5 can have championship games. 12-1 championship game winner looks a lot better than 11-1 round-robin champ.

regular season scheduling is largely regional and, as such, it is ruining our abilities to effectively evaluate different conferences at the national level - that is why we need more playoff games in order to do so.

I don't necessarily agree. Sure, it isn't like the NFL where you can really judge objectively, but by and large the top teams play equally tough schedules. At least close enough to be able to adequately judge two teams side-by-side. It is a little tough with the 4/5 teams, but I am ok with that. Much better than a system that requires 5 P5 champs and 1 non-P5 team, which is how I see an expansion going.

i certainly disagree here, there is far too much variance in scheduling, most likely because there is not a universally agreed upon standard among all P5 schools.

its a joke that Baylor and Stanford, for examples, can head into this season with the same opportunities as playoffs teams considering the schedules they both played.

If they go to 8, they will guarantee the P5 teams their conf champ. That fricking blows. There are years where a team could be 9-3 from the ACC and make it in over a 1-loss team that finished second in another conference. Political and media pressure will NEVER let them just choose the Top 8 ranked teams. For that reason, I don't like it.

Your scenario is likely, but there would be 3 at large bids too, so that takes care of the top 3 teams that weren't conference champs.

So this year you would have had:

Alabama - SEC champ
Clemson - ACC champ
Michigan St - B1G champ
Oklahoma - B12 champ
Stanford - P12 champ

Iowa - at large
Ohio St - at large
Notre Dame - at large

I just based these on the final CFP rankings.

You mean 2. The media and non-sports fans would bitch about the little guy and threaten more class-action suits, causing them to put in a guarantee for the non-P5 team that finishes in the Top-14 (like the BCS exemption for them).

Having said that, it seems inevitable now.

Why because the dumbass majority on this board want to go to 8?

2 was enough. A majority of the time there's only two deserving teams and they're pretty obvious choices. Occasionally you'll have 3. So the four team playoff sort of makes sense there but there's no way in hell anyone will ever justify an 8 team playoff to me.

I don't see it this way. Let's say both teams played their schedule to the tune of 1 loss, you don't think Stanford would've been in over Baylor because of the strength of their schedule?

That would be a hell of a playoff.

I don't think that's anywhere close to true.

I would like this, but if you think there would ever be a chance in hell that 3 teams (deserving or otherwise) would get in from the same conf, you're crazy. They would spread the love around to keep the most interest.

Also, Notre Dame played no conf championship and still lost 2 games. No thanks to them having even a shot at the title. Same with FSU.

I'm personally a fan of a 4 team playoff seeded using BCS process (computer average + polls).

Considering the controversy last year was letting Ohio state in over tcu is say they did a pretty damn good job.

Considering the real controversy was letting Florida State in over TCU, I'd say they did a pretty damn poor job.

As a fan, I'd love an 8 team playoff.

Go 6 and give the T2 seeds a bye.

the only expansion I'd see working is a 6 team playoff with the top 2 getting a bye.

Was coming to post this. I think it would be better than 8.

Nobody was questioning having the undefeated defending 13-0 national champion acc champion Seminoles over an 11-1 big 12 kind of champs/runner up. There were arguments over their seeding but not whether they should be in. The controversy was whether or not the big 10 (thought to compete with the big 12 for worst conference last year) champ who had lost to a terrible va tech team deserved in

8 is too damn many.

I love it at 4.

I used to think that but I think this year showed that the process is so flawed that I don't trust them to put the right 4 teams in

8 would allow for some non conference champs and 2 loss teams to squeeze in and make it a lot more interesting

I think Ohio State could have made a pretty good run at it again

4 teams suck. Especially when you have 5 power conferences and Notre Dame. Expand it to 6-8 and cap it there.

What happens when:

Oregon goes 12-0 and wins the Pac 12
Ohio State goes 12-0 and wins the Big 10
Texas goes 12-0 and wins the Big 12
Florida State goes 12-0 and wins the ACC
Alabama goes 12-0 and wins the SEC
Notre Dame goes 12-0 (and doesn't play FSU that year in their ACC play)

5 conference champions
It's amazing that people still think this is a good idea.

Not every team is in a conference, and a conference championship refers to a fraction of a team's season. Just take the best however many teams regardless of conference affiliation. Jesus.

Considering the blowouts of Michigan State and OU (and the blowouts of Iowa and ND), they didn't get that done this year...
