Didn't he/she recently just commit vehicular homicide?

For the record, if they gave the award to someone for not seeking help for their schizophrenia, I'd be just as annoyed.

this. Homosexuality and transgender issues are mental disorders and we're just told as a society to not only "just go with it" but to celebrate it in a similar fashion to giving a medal to the mentally disabled kid in the school field day.

Not going through this thread. But, what about Lauren Hill? She is deserving of this award. Facing brain cancer and achieving her dream of playing a college basketball game. Not only that, brought awareness and raised money for pediatric cancer foundation while dying. Award going to Jenner is a travesty.

THIS is what bothers me the most about all this lunacy. If a dude wants to pretend he's not a dude and dress as a woman, fine. If that makes you happy, go for it and make yourself happy. But the media forcing it on the rest of America and saying "Look at how BRAVE this is! How courageous! All of this is ok!!!" is sickening. If Bruce was just really mentally anguished over this, he would have just done it and lived his life in peace. But no, he has to give prime time interviews and be on magazine covers telling us to call him a womans name now. Frick this.

Didn't realize the namesake of said award was active in organized sports when the award was named after him

I believe Ashe remained active in the tennis world for awhile during retirement and was a leading figure in the fight against AIDS.

Jenner has done trashy reality television...

Jenner winning the award is kind of a slap in the face to Ashe in my opinion.

Because ESPN wants to trot bruce and that family of whores out there for a rating, they could give a shite about giving the award out to someone more deserving, as there are probably literally hundreds more deserving candidates.

And I really want someone to troll the national media because of all this. We are now accepting when people say they were "assigned the wrong gender". Ok that's fine but where does it stop? Can someone be assigned the wrong species? "I was supposed to be a cat. I will now turn into a cat." Will this person be met with the same back slapping? I really want to see this

The thing is, i really don't care what people do. If someone wants to turn themselves into a 7 eyed toad, then whatever ... go for it. I just don't need it shoved down my throat.

Yep, ratings.
Unfortunately, this threads numerous post is making a good case for ESPN's making the right call. That's if ratings are ESPN's main concern. Boy, us humans love some controversy. Don't we? I even got suck right into the fray..... lol

after his reception at the draft, he seemed like an obvious both for his story (son, his own struggles) and marketability (clearly a real favorite right now)

If Jenner was smart she'd turn it down and call out ESPN on it.

I was going to laugh at you at first, but that would actually bring him more attention.
