re: A current all-NBA team would wreck the dream team

So 25% of players from the '80's and '90's are better than LeBron? If there were 1,000 players who played during that span, that would mean 250 players from then are better than LeBron

Westbrook being the most athletic pg of all time is something that everyone should agree on.
actually, if you look at his pre draft combine numbers, he's upper echelon, but he's clearly not the most athletic across the board.
for instance, Derrick Rose jumped 4" higher, and was faster in the full court sprint.
DWade, same vert, same sprint time, but a much better shuttle.
shite, jordan farmar has a higher vertical jump

The only pg dunking like Westbrook is Rose. Rose and Westbrook are very similar athletically.

Of all the stupid things that have been said in this thread, adding a Spaniard is the deal breaker for you?
It was 2nd, only to him including Giannis in his OP when he has the whole NBA to pick from.
then the guy that kept showing how high Deandre Jordan jumped

But for the purpose of this thread as a group the '92 dream team would eat todays players alive
Only 5 can play on the court at one time.
quote:
In one training session the group divided into two teams, Blue (led by Johnson, with Barkley, Robinson, Mullin, and Laettner) and White (led by Jordan, with Malone, Ewing, Pippen, and Bird). Clyde Drexler and John Stockton did not play because of injuries. Daly told the teams to play "All you got now. All you got." White won, 40 to 36, in what Jordan recalled as "the best game I was ever in" and Sports Illustrated later called "the Greatest Game Nobody Ever Saw"
So Jordan, Malone, Ewing, Pippen, and Bird beat Magic, Barkley, Robinson, Mullin and Laettner 40-36. I think that bodes well for the 2015 squad, since Westbrook, KD, LeBron, AD, and Gasol are better than Magic's team.

I do not think he is and there are others that believe the same and are more respected in their opinions than some clowns on a message boards (including myself)

Norris Cole had a higher vert and shuttle time than Westbrook

So now the current team gets to play against only half the Dream Team?
Sweet. They wouldn't even need D. Jordan at that point.

I bet if track wasn't timed, people would say today's sprinters couldn't measure up to Carl Lewis when high schoolers are running better times.
I'd like to see a link were HS kids are regular running 9.86 100s cause that's Lewis' fastest time.
It's not that humans have evolved over a mere 25-30 years, but knowledge about nutrition and training have and technology has also improved dramatically.
The tracks at Beijing in 2008 and London 2012 are much better than LA 1984.
What always kills me in these debates is that younger guys seem unwilling to accept that if some of the past greats have access to the knowledge we have now, that they would still be among the greats.
ETA: Here's a link that shows the US records for HS kids. The national record for the 100 is 10.00 by a kid last year. Carl Lewis broke 10 seconds numerous times and the record for the 200 was set in the 1980

But the post play is more physical now due to the rules.
Bill Laimbeer says hi. Actually, so do all of the Pistons.
Frankly, post play is not nearly as physical these days for a rather obvious reason: no one wants to cost someone else $20 million.
Defenses are more sophisticated today, no doubt. But teams in the 90s were far more prone to cheating, and dirty play. In today's game, LeBron is allowed to go the rim, and he knows for a fact that no one like Rick Mahorn is going to undercut him so he can't land properly and blow out his knees. Players can do things today because, well, the game is less prone to thuggery. This is a positive development, by the way, but if we're talking, who wins? The 90s players are used to playing by a different set of rules. They will waste a few dirty fouls in order to get a point across.
I equate it to hockey. People joke that defense had not yet been invented in the 80s (the scoring was almost twice as high then as now), but there were far more goons and dirty hits. Today's players are better defenders, but they would get their arse kicked by Scott Stevens and Dale Hunter. Same with the NBA. I do think that, outside of Pippen, the 2012 team are pretty much all better technical defenders... but more physical?
Not a chance in hell. The Bad Boys or the Knicks would not be allowed to exist in 2014. But they did in 1992, which tells you what you need to know about the enforcement of the rules. 1992 Jordan had just been toughened up by the Pistons. There ain't no one that plays like the Pistons these days. No one.
And every time I read about modern front court players making their living 20 feet from the basket, I just imagine Ralph Sampson getting really pissed off about being born 25 years too soon.

Only 5 can play at once, and the starting lineup for both teams would be very competitive.

But you can't split the Dream Team down the middle and then pick the 5 best current guys and say Game On!!
That would be like taking half of today's best players and putting them up against the 5 best in 1992. They would get demolished.
