Venmo makes money out of the 3% CC fees. It's free for debit and ach pulls out of bank. They also make money on the sweep out of people's balances on venmo.
PayPal is 2.99% for CC and square is the same.
All three are free for debit and ach pulls

I hate the word literally, but literally everyone I know uses Venmo.
I literally have never heard of venmo until this thread, and I do nearly every financial transaction electronically. Weird.

Venmo is the thing where u give money to a friend and then make public as to why and what the money is for #dollaselfie look at me! (Actually.. IRS don't look at my public info)

Why venmo over PayPal?
I haven't used PayPal since March of 2015 when I got an email from PayPal threatening to suspend my account for "illegal gambling."
I was collecting $20 from friends for a NCAA march madness basketball pool.

Venmo. I'm 25 and I don't know a single person who uses any of the others in person to person transactions. Only time anyone my age uses paypal is to buy something online if that's the only option.

Does it really matter? This is at the bottom of every Venmo email.
Venmo is a service of PayPal, Inc., a licensed provider of money transfer services. All money transmission is provided by PayPal, Inc. pursuant to PayPal, Inc.’s licenses. © 2016 PayPal, Inc.

Venmo is now popular in Louisiana. My first p2p transaction was with Square Cash so I have stuck with it.
Anyone heard of Splitwise? Similar concept but with some added functionality. If charges fees those in transactions.

I don't see any difference between Venmo and Paypal other than the social media aspect. You can send money for free through Paypal very easily.
Does Venmo use email addresses as "account numbers" as well?

I use venmo very frequently since all of my friends have it.
I've used Square Cash maybe twice.

This. I'm 25 as well and use venmo on a weekly basis. It is incredibly user friendly and the most convenient way to process money transactions between friends that I know of.
No more friends having to "get you back" only to forget to pay you later on. It's 2016, cash is inconvenient and humans have an attention span of a goldfish- you're probably not getting paid back.
You owe someone for gas, food, bills, whatever it is and you submit the payment on venmo and it's in their bank account the very next day, oh and it's free if you use ACH/debit...
I consider any of my friends that don't use venmo to be assholes.
Also, I don't have a lock on my phone but I do have a lock code to open the venmo app so I'm also protected if my phone were to ever be stolen.
Paypal is essentially the same thing as venmo except for that more people (my age) use venmo than paypal (probably because of the user interface), so I see no point in having two applications with the same function.
ETA: I only use paypal for online payments i.e. ebay purchases or a-holes that refuse to use venmo
I love venmo.

You can set your payments to private...

I used to use spiltwise to spilt bills with roommates. It was a pretty convenient way to track p2p transactions and who owed who what.
Since I started using venmo, which allowed me to make payments to others the minute I owed them something, I have not used splitwise anymore.
I appreciate the idea of splitwise though

Both
Venmo for the under 30 crowd and paypal for the over 30s.
Venmo is much better in my opinion.

venmo because of the sweet emojis
really though, everyone I know is on it and I can't imagine a simpler process
I do worry it'll be hacked or something

Square because that's what my friends use.
also the sound effect is really gratifying
I used Square once and after reading an article that compares the 3, I like that your info is more private and less social than venmo but everyone I know uses Venmo. I guess I'll have to give in. I also don't like how w/ Venmo you have to request Venmo to transfer your money from your Venmo account to your bank account whereas w/ Square Cash it does it automatically.

I use square for my business.
When I first started, I went to Chase to get a credit card processing machine installed. The one they offered was ancient, needed to be plugged into a dial up jack, and had fees around 3.75%. Square is much more user friendly, looks great at the register and I have gotten their credit card fees down to 2.3%.
After a year of seeing the square transactions go into my chase business account, Chase tried to offer a better deal and equipment and I politely declined.

Paypal's fees are fairly high.

This. I just turned 26 and made a thread mentioning that my mom has venmo on this board and people acted like I was nuts.
Venmo is great, I use it daily from splitting lunches, beer, sporting events - it's literally great for everything.
I still use Paypal, but it's only because it's the only thing Stubhub will take when I sell my season Ranger tickets.

God forbid you have to press like two more buttons on your touch screen phone.
