Stepmother hit my older car. Opinions on what you would do.

So I am living outside the USA now, but I keep my 99 Camry at my dads house so I have something to drive when I am home. It's worth around $3,000 - $3,500.

Today my stepmother ran her car down the side of it and of course is offering to fix it.

I have no shame driving my 99 Camry as it is (was) in perfect condition and very clean prior to the incident. But I don't want to drive around a vehicle with body damage.

That said, it isn't worth much and spending the money to fix such an old asset seems silly.

I'm leaning towards chalking it up to life, not letting her fix it and just drive it around when I'm home.

What do you guys think?

I mean, you're not even using the thing.

This is similar to our older car having a small AC leak. I can recharge it for $80 before every summer and limp it to the finish line or pay hundreds of dollars to fix the leak.

The car only needs to serve you for limited duration at this point, so why bother?

I suppose you could have her pay for diminished value?

A quick search on kbb its worth maybe 2k in very good condition.

Id chalk it up to life. I wouldnt think the scratch would hurt the value a ton if you sell it.

I think you might be dreaming.

The simple fact that you're still driving it tells me you're likely never going to sell it, so why even worry about the resale value?

If you don't want to drive around a car with body damage, but also don't think it's worth the money to fix the car, you can just chalk it up to life. 18 years is a long time to keep a vehicle in top shape.

This. I doubt a 99 camry is worth $3k but maybe. I mean a side body damage is going to be probably $1500+ right?

Why not sell the car and have her give you some cash? How much would the damage remove from the car's value? I doubt anywhere close to how much the repair bill would be.

She essentially "totaled" your car.

if it's the car I'm thinking it is, just let it go... I doubt you could get 3k for it unless you left $1500 in glovebox.

If you make $3500 off a 1999 Camry, I am starting a car business today.

It has 65k miles on it so I'm pretty sure I could. But that is really pointless. It isn't worth much.

I'll just let it slide and chalk it up to life.

I'm back in the States every few months. Why do I need to be in the country?

You should apologize to her for keeping your shitty old car at her house.

If she and your dad have been letting you leave that car at their house, you should definitely not let her pay you anything. How much of you been paying them for the parking spot? Beyond that, it's up to you whether you want to get it fixed. Sounds like you got a decent stepmom, time for you to be the cool stepson.

I had almost a similar thing happen but it was my mom hitting my truck. They offered to pay for it and I accepted and to this day, almost 20 years later I regret it and feel like a greedy shite for accepting the money. Don't do it.

Bro. Can you believe I sold that car and bought the exact same one. Same color and everything just with WAY less miles.
