Daughter is 3 years old. Started a 529 LA Start plan for her. Below is how I have allocated my contributions. Any thoughts?

50% VASGX
20% VITNX
10% VSISX
10% VMISX
10% VLCSX

Hang on. Let me plug those into my computer and see which ones will be the best earners in 20 years. BRB

That's a good group overall, but you've got a lot of overlap. VASGX is meant to be a one-fund portfolio.

For example, it holds 56% VITNX. You are holding an extra 20% in your portfolio. Also, VITNX is a total market fund, so it represents VSISX, VMISX and VLCSX.

Like I said, it's a good group of funds. But if it were me, I'd put it all in VASGX.

Yes I know VASGX is meant to be a one-fund portfolio. Just figured since this money is in holding for 15 years I would pick a few other funds just for the heck of it. I can always change my allocations.

Thanks for the reply.

Do the 529s offer any amount match or is just a tax free account? (pre or post earnings?)

very interested in these and would like to start one. I've even heard some states have prepaid plans that let you lock in today's tuition prices but I don't know the best place to start one

Funded post tax, earnings are tax free if used for education-related expenses. Some states offer a tax break if you fund that state's 529 plan as a resident.

Louisiana matches a certain amount depending on your income. Pretty small amount for anyone with a decent job, but it is still something.

LA Start does offer a match based on your AGI. 2-14%. I am receiving 4% match. The higher your AGI the lower your match.

Are there any grandparents that might fall into the 14% match range? You can gift money to them and they can donate. You would lose the state tax deduction but the additional 10% match would most likely make up for it. However, the 529 would be owned by the grandparent.

Grats on getting this started. I'm with VEST so can't comment on the investments but I would imagine you are fine.
