Signing up for health insurance... where to start?

I find myself a couple weeks away from 26, and now have to get my own health insurance plan, and not very sure where to start. I've tried to search the topic, but no luck. If there's already a thread you can link me to where this topic has been previously discussed, that would be awesome!

Any suggestions on where to start when it comes to signing up for health insurance? I know just about nothing about it. I've done a few google searches and see that there are a lot of options. I rarely go to the doctor and am in good health. Any advice would be much appreciated!

You're 26? Do you have a full time employer? That's one place to start, see what they offer.

Thanks, Obama

I'll be 26 at the end of the month, and I work full time but my employer does not offer insurance. I've worked previously at places that offer (whole foods, etc), and could go back part time to take advantage of that, but I'd rather not. I'm in California, if it matters.

Since you're healthy, get a HD plan through the exchange.

You start by getting a piece of rebar. Make sure not to get the scented or warming lube, those will burn when it is inserted.

In California they have businesses on every corner that will assist you on with signing up for Obamacare. Ex co-worker of mine told me it took about 20 minutes and they reviewed all his options and helped him pick out the best plan for him.
Had never heard of a business to help you sign up but I would not be surprised if California pays them to sign up enrollees.

You're about to find one of the few areas in which it helps for you to not make much money. Because if you make too much to get federal subsidies, you're about to be in a world of hurt.

You mean, when it comes to getting health insurance it benefits me that I don't make much? I'm not sure how much would put me out of getting subsidies, but I can promise you I don't make that amount.

I'm going to look into the marketplace as others have mentioned before.

You might want to check into sharing ministries.

It's cheaper and better than any exchange plan.

i'd look into something like Liberty On Call. It qualifies as insurance but isn't technically insurance.

You have to be in a sweet spot of income to get the Obamacare subsidies. Too much, and you'll have to pay cash, too little and they'll try to get you on Medicaid. Get a high deductible plan (won't be hard almost all of them on the site are high deductible plans - thanks obama), then don't get sick.

What are the cons to doing this?

I'm surprised more Churches don't offer this.

So you have been uninsured for the past several years? You must be in good health.

Does the sign up process take any time? I guess you won't be able to answer this question. I'm wondering if I should get the ball rolling now

Rocket, you're doing it wrong.

An exemption to the penalty is apparently

Common mistake that young people make. You could be in a car wreck that would put you in the hospital for a month with a year of physical therapy following that. And the person who hit you has 10/20/5 coverage.
