So I recently went to a little burrito place and bought a 6 dollar burrito and paid with my debit card. I know the charge was 6 dollars cause I did the math on the tip to get it to 8 dollars and signed it. Luckily I checked my account and saw they charged me $1500 for that burrito. I called the bank and put a claim in but what are the chances I get my money back if I don't have the receipt? Will the restaurant be required to produce my signed receipt? Also, I'm supposed to get alerts from chase but received nothing from them, what's the deal there?

You should be fine.

If you have decent credit you need to get a credit card and use that instead of a debit card. Giving access to your bank account is not a good idea.

This. I have mostly Capital One credit cards (Venture, Spark Business, etc). I have had several instances like this and I get my money back almost immediately. couple of examples:

- Parked in a lot in New Orleans that advertised $25 overnight parking. I swiped my card and looked at my receipt; they charged me $35. As expected, no one would answer phone calls at the phone number on my receipt. I was able to make a successful claim for the $10 difference on Cap 1's site.

- In New York, I requested a ride to JFK via Carmel Limo (kind of like Uber). The ride was very late so I grabbed a cab instead. The carmel limo app wouldn't let me cancel the ride but I got in touch with the driver who said he would cancel it for me. He didn't and I got charged almost $50 (including a tip) for a ride that never happened. I couldn't get a customer service person to call me back or return my emails. Cap 1 reversed the charge after I filed a claim online.

If someone does this to a credit card you simply have to call the cc company and dispute the charge. They are responsible for getting their money back not you. However with a debit card you are likely responsible for returning to the vender a d getting the owner to return it. Good luck!

Never use a debit card for such things. I rarely use one at all.

Should I confront the owner about this? Or just let the bank handle it?

You're fine.

Though you might wanna go ahead and call the cops. This is felony fraud, they should be interested to know about it.

I'd definitely tell the owner. It may have been a simple mistake....or it may be an incident of fraud on the part of a rogue employee. Owner might like to know that he has a bad apple, don't you think?

What "little burrito" place was this?

Thus happened to me at "little burrito" place.

I got my money back eventually after much runaround from them.

$1000 charge on a $9, they blamed it on fat fingers by the server.

They werent even very apologetic, and only refunded the money when I told them I was filing a dispute with my bank. Took me almost 2 weeks to get my $1k back.

Yes. What the last poster said. Probably either a mistake or rogue employee - either way the owner wants to know.

Wow. Nevermind on my last post. Sounds like this dude is in on it.

Tell him to give you your fricking money back or you're calling the bank, the health department, ICE, and Tony Soprano.

Actually, I just remembered, they didn't even refund my money. They told me it'd be easier to file the dispute with my bank.

It was Izzos in Lake Charles.

Easier for who? Them or you?

depends on the term easy -- my experience is a simple refund can take 1-2 weeks to process, while disputes get the funds back in my account almost instantly. it does take an extra phone call though.

Update

This was at burrito express on Burbank. I went and talked to the owner and he immediately told me he talked to the bank and I should be getting my money back. Claims he has no idea what happened and that it happened to a few others for charges of $2000 and $3000

This is not true.

I had an issue a few years back where someone charged the same amount (roughly $300) to my Chase debit card somewhere around 12 times. (To a verizon store out in California)

I live in Louisiana. I called Chase, was on the phone for all of 3 minutes and they had the money back into my account the next day.

Call your bank and let them know what happened. They'll be happy to help you.

Never use debit cards. Hell I just had to contact my bank because they keep trying to give me a check card to replace my ATM card.

Get an ATM card for cash and just use credit cards for purchases, then you don't have to worry about anyone emptying out your checking account and having to put in the effort to get it back.

You have 60 days from when your statement is issued with Chase to dispute a charge. If you've already done this don't sweat it. You will not be charged for the $1500 burrito and Chase will handle the burrito company.

That's what I love about Chase. You file the dispute and Chase says, "We got this. Relax."

My grandmother actually had her credit card stolen and the thief charged $8000. Chase took the loss and the thief arrested. A bank like Chase (assets in the trillions of dollars) can just eat certain charges.

And Chase will not 'alert' you just because of activity on your account no matter the amount. They will however call you if it gets out of hand to make sure it's you doing it. Once you sign up for alerts you can customize it.

Chase isn't eating anything. They simply take the money back from the merchants where the charges occurred.

what?

So you don't want the money taken out of your account immediately when you purchase something yet are ok with just "owing" money?

Cash is becoming less relevant and 90% of the population will go in debt with credit accounts.

Just because you're good at managing your money doesn't mean others are, nor should you suggest something to someone when it might be better suited for them than for you.
