you aren't considering a move to Hanoi, Vietnam. Dallas is a $200 flight away and you can go check out the area. One poster just offered to jump on a call with you. Talk to folks from the area and visit it yourself if you are struggling with a an "unknown".

It's understandable to be nervous about a move, but once you make it, you'll be relieved and look back and be glad you did.

what would you say are the main differences between living in the NOLA/BR area and Dallas? asking for a friend.

1. Size of market. Dallas is one of the biggest cities in America and still growing. NOLA still kind of has the good ole boy network. There's a lot of what neighborhood you're from or what high school you went to. While it is a big city it is tiny compared to the DFW metroplex.

2. Crime. Self-explanatory

Opportunities are the biggest difference. There are tons of jobs here, as opposed to New Orleans or BR.

The money is better overall. Dallas is a cleaner city. You don't walk down the street and smell nothing but sewer.

There are a lot more places to go out. Which is a good thing and a bad thing. I haven't really found that place that I would call my "spot" yet. I'm still trying to visit more places and see which one.

The only thing I really miss about New Orleans is being able to Uber down to FQF for lunch during the workday going to other festivals and stuff like that.

Never lived in Dallas but been there a lot. I lived 6 yrs in Katy and then moved back to NOLA so I have a similar (not exact) experience.

If the most important things to you revolve around money, material items, status, etc, make the move. The ceiling for material things is much higher in Texas than it will ever be in LA. No one can deny that. The opportunity for earnings and job advancement for the average non-connected individual are higher in the big Texas cities.

Having said that, I moved back to have a good life and to be near family. I make good money, live in a nice home, and my kids go to a highly rated public school. None of them are off the charts but all are very solid.

Yes if you live in Texas you can catch a quick southwest flight at any time. But living in NOLA, My mom and my inlaws make most if not all of my kids sports games. They attend every grandparents day. They stay at grandmas house and mawmaws house at least once a month. Those would be a lot less frequent if we were in Texas.

Our life here is a very good one. We would make , easy, a combined 50k a year more if we were still in Texas. i don't care. Having my kids grow up around the extended family is worth much more than that.

Oh, and I don't feel unsafe here. The crime thing is overblown... it's gangbangers shooting each other. Don't be a gangbanger or associate with them and you are fine. Random crime here is no more random than anywhere else.

If me and my wife didn't have kids? We would still be in Texas.

Another transplant from LA here. Been here seven years now. Life in the DFW is great.

Leaving behind many of the cons of life in Louisiana has been awesome and I couldn't imagine going back at this time. We have young kids so being away from family is the toughest part. But it is worth it to us. As always, YMMV.

What area would your wife be working? If possible, I would recommend avoiding commutes that include long stretches of 75 or the tollway. The real estate market is crazy now, but it's still possible to have a nice house for 120-130/sf and a commute of 30 mins or less, though not in every scenario. Good luck if you decide to come over!

this is your answer right here. Dont move when your kids are in HS.

I grew up in the dallas area. I really don't like Dallas, its a cesspool of non culture. Its gotten a touch better but is still pretty lame if you ask me.

It is cheap living and jobs are plentiful. And you can drive as fast as you want on the interstates which is nice.

Nope. I guess it depends on what you want, but it has shockingly little culture.

Good. "culture" is overrrated. When you want some flavor, take a vacation.

What culture specifically, do other places have that Dallas does not?

I've seriously never really understood that.

There is just nothing particularly unique about most of dallas. Its just sprawl on top of sprawl. Strip shopping centers attached to strip shopping centers. Lots of chain restaurants.

and while every large city has sprawl, they usually have something else too that is unique to the city. What makes dallas special?

They killed JFK, and had a pretty cool show in the 80's.

That's about the only impression I've gotten from visiting a college friend that lived there for several years after college.

If you don't enjoy living in south LA, I would jump quickly at the 30k increase in Dallas. The economy, infrastructure, school, and overall quality of life is better. However that is not for everyone. I love living in New Orleans. All my friends and family are here. My income would have to more than double for me to even consider moving to Dallas or Houston.

Sounds about right.

To be fair though, my friend got married right after graduating and started having a family. So he never really ventured out to enjoy Dallas. I mean, he lived in Plano and worked in Arlington. We'd go down to Dallas when I came to visit and he'd have no clue on where to go. So we'd walk around Delay Plaza, go grab a beer somewhere, then go back to Plano to eat at Pappasito's. I'm sure Dallas has more to offer than that. Just seemed to lack character to me.

But I also think living in any big city in the US is what you make of it.
