I did not see this under topics already discussed.

First Question: Buying online - have any of you all purchased it that route and if so where did you find the best service/price?

Second: What is the minimum/least expensive set of "4 C's" that you all found that produce a quality diamond?

Thanks.

Any other advice is great.

Yes, I know Ill get the advice to not do it

IIRC its about "I" or "J" in color and S1 in clarity before anyone can even tell with their eye. I'm sure someone can clear that up, but that is my current guess off memory.

Just stay away from visible inclusions and you'll be fine.

As for online, I didn't do it myself but many here will vouch for Blue Nile.

Remember, you're getting fricked regardless, so just find the best deal with the least amount of strokes.

True. Best advice is to just do whatever you feel is right

Don't worry about having to spend a certain amount. If you like it, pull the trigger.

Not sure about other places, but I got a deal for paying with cash. Saved $800

Yup, no one wants to pay credit card swipe fees and/or taxes

Blue Nile is a huge online diamond store

it depends, diamonds can have similar Cs, but look very different due to cut dimensions and inclusion locations. what cut of diamond are you looking for?

color: no need to go to the total colorless if you are looking to save money. a G color diamone looks the same as a D to the naked eye.

Clarity: this is a big one where you can save some money depending on what you are looking for.

you can get and SI1 or VS2 where the inclusions are located in strategic spots (depending on the cut you choose) that are hard to see.

Carat: entirely up to you and what you can afford / willing to spend.

I was lucky.

My wife prefers sapphires to diamonds.

Interestingly, Princess Di did too.

Sapphires are cheaper, but lovely gemstones.

Good luck to you.

She hinted she wanted a Princess/Solitaire (which I assume is popular)

I'm thinking around 1 1/4 carats.

Anyone been to Houston Diamond Outlet or other outlets like that? I heard they have good deals if you pay cash.

Also, I have inherited diamond rings that have been appraised around 3k (I know I wont get that much for them)

Should I think about trading them in or sell them? If I was to sell, how should I go about it according to you all who have sold jewelry?

Best advice: find you a broker or a wholesaler and do business with them. They'll get you a good deal.

I never bought online but I think BlueNile.com has a fabulous website. They make it so easy.

Blue nile was great when I purchased. The site is extremely easy to use, in addition to all the information supplied. I would totally recommend rather than using a brick and mortar store. Although I hate the whole process of dealing with those salesmen.

For the 4C's, I think that the order of importance is Cut, Color, and Clarity. Carat is more dictated by what you're wanting to spend than anything else. Once you know what size you want, I'd narrow it down to ideal cut or better since this is what makes the diamond "sparkle" by letting in light efficiently. Focus on getting something in the colorless range (you don't have to go crazy here), and try to get at least VS2 for clarity. The untrained eye will struggle to find any issues with a diamond meeting those specs.

or the top of the near colorless range. you wont be able to tell the difference between a D and a G

As a few others have stated, stay away from the big stores. The markups are absurd.

Best of luck

I went on Amazon and found a few suppliers that were offering the ring I was after, then tracked down those suppliers individually and picked from the most reputable at the price I wanted. Saved about $1k vs. the listed price on Blue Nile and ordering direct ended up being cheaper than the Amazon price as well. The ring appraised for double what I paid, so it was a good experience.

Can't remember the name of the supplier and I don't know if they still exist, but I remember they were based in Houston

I am not sure where you are located but if near Metairie, check out Edberg Jewelry, ask for Larry (if he still works, might be retired). If no Larry, Ed can help you.

While I am not shutting on your method of finding a deal, which does sound quite good), your ring is probably going to appraise for twice what you paid regardless.

However, that appraisal means jack and shite. You won't get near that if trying to sell it. That number is an illusion and nothing else.

Honestly I have zero idea what the point of that number even is. The insurance company doesn't even care about it.

I used Blue Nile, no complaints. I called them before I ordered and the guy actually gave me a couple options of diamonds that were 3K cheaper than the one I iniatially picked out. He explained the whole 4 c's to me and how there was no difference in size of the diamond I picked versus the ones he showed me. Wife's happy so I'm happy.
