I do it rather easily on a higher household income.

If you believe in private schools, sacrificing 7200 of roth ira per year when already saving 15k (plus potential company match you're already getting) is worth the investment.
Plus you put 350k for home. In most of America, you can bring that down to 250k and still have a great home, which would knock that mortgage number down another few thousands.

All of this.

I knew this thread would end up going in all kind of directions considering how silly the OP was with assumptions. For every one CCL and U Club rich person who sends their kid to private school with ease, there are 10 who are working their asses off to make ends meet, but doing what they think is right for their kids.
I firmly believe, a $150K gross house hold income should cover two kids easily and allow for a good home and a few vacations a year. If you can't figure this out, then your priorities might need to be looked at.

Lol at thinking this scenario of 12% 401k and iras is so much. It's not even the recommended amount. I never said it was impossible or that I was impoverished.

My man stop, I don't care about your situation I care that you think $150k is barely getting by lol if you know me or some of the things I've posted you'd know I make significantly north of that and yes it's still not enough for everything I wanna do but I'd never complain like you about it. You're very blessed to make $150k a year, your career earnings will be in the top 1% of the entire global population, look up what percent of planet earth lives on sub $10/day. When you realize what you're saying you'll realize why you look like a moron right now, so from one rich guy to another, yes you're rich

We did it when we lived in BR. I was an engineer and my wife worked for the state. of course, we were a bit more frugal than Serraneaux:
Our mortgage was $8k less per year, and had no HOA.
Our daycare was $20k less (1 kid)
Car payments were $2.5k less
If you combine eating out, vacation, summer camps, misc sports etc into a single "entertainment" budget, our was probably $4k less.

Ignoring the daycare, that sums up to $15.7k in savings that we could easily apply to school tuition.

These are choices that you make and they speak to your priorities. My parents made huge sacrifices personally in order to send me and my 3 siblings to private schools in BR.

you live in Brentwood. Private school is priced into your real estate. It's just called public school

Edit: to back Serreaneaux least expensive 4 bedroom home over 2600ft2 in Brentwood is 399k and backs up to train tracks and is 40 years old. An acre west of 65 starts around 200k, can go to 500k based on location & topography.

Why my kids go to Grassland. Cost Free99 a year. 19 kids in his class

At this point after having 2 threads lay it all out for this guy and him still not "get it" he's just proved how stubborn or completely ignorant he is.

Knock off the "woe is me because i'm not white" bullshite and:
-wake up
-read financial success books
-invest in your education
-hang out with people more successful than you
-don't look for pity
-leave within your means
-watch your wealth accumulate

another kid in daycare or private school wiped that out

I've skimped on that budget above. Two working professionals who have to look nice and two kids clothes (shoes, jackets, etc) and other consumer goods. It would take someone with discipline to do that in Nashville and live in a nice area. Private school and or daycare is 15k per kid in Nashville. Real Estate in Nashville right now is absurd (or at least in the parts you want to live in. I had three in daycare at one point. I will probably spend close to 320k toal on daycare before they all go to Kenrose which essentially is a private school.

How is day care that much when they are also in school for most of the day? Are they not in after school activities?

Well, when both parents work and they are under the age of five or six the kids have to somewhere during the day. Daycare in Nashville can be 1250 per kid easy. And this is at some of the churches. Sure it can be cheaper but you are not going to want to send you kids to those.

my point was we have 1 in daycare and 2 in private school and aren't really "cutting back".

That is my point. Have some discipline.

1 school age and 2 in daycare school. You have to pay to live in a good school district (which is one of the best in the state). There is literally nothing in school we are zoned for, for less than $599k.

If you aren't in a house right now in Franklin or Brentwood or you wait 2-3 years until your kids get to be school aged you are just going to be paying more for that house. I bought a 3 BR townhouse in Dec 2015 for 231,500 and a similar one that isn't as updated as the one I bought is selling for $290k. I get close to 2k in rent which is more than my current mortgage payment,

From my experience(having my roomate and best friend work/manage at Tsunami for 6 years while in college) asians in America are flashy as shite with there money

People have a very skewed idea of what private school means. Not every private school is Episcopal. There are a lot of blue-collar parents where my kids go.

Trust me, NO ONE BESIDES US are paying for our kids Catholic school tuition. Grandparents haven't paid one penny NOR do I expect them to.

We're down to 1 in high school, 1 as a freshman in college (TOPS, schollys, we help with the rest) and one down to last semester in grad school (he's got an assistantship). Granted our tuition isn't $20K per kid AND we max out all of our retirement vehicles. Husband is self employed and income from year to year can really swing but I take offense to you saying that at $150K that someone else is paying for tuition, vacations, whatever.

We pay it all. And to whomever said that families want to leave money, I told my parents to please enjoy life and only worry about leaving enough for me to be able to provide for their care when the time comes. I honestly don't care if I "get any money" or not.

Don;t know how it is in BR, but here in Birmingham a lot of the private schools offer scholarships, tuition assistance, and other things to certain students, especially kids of former students. It doesn't happen much at the more prestigious ones, but certainly at a lot of the middle of the road ones. Private school really isn't all that expensive here though, mainly because the suburban school systems are so good.
