It hurts no way around it unless you are in that small club that makes north of $200k. Even those people can live above their means as well in my experience. I have three kids in private school and it is the equivalent of a house note on a decent home. Public school just isn't really an option i want to explore as long as i can write that check. Hurts even more this year with the pay cuts due to the oil field down turn.

Some people also think ahead. I currently live in New Orleans (guaranteed private school), my wife and I will do pretty well for ourselves when she gets out of school, but we have an agreement that if we stay here we'll probably only have 1 child. Unless our financial situation changes drastically, we will have to make too many sacrifices if we have multiple children.

Many people have more children than they can afford.

are public schools really that bad where you guys are at? Thats so weird to me, I never went to public schools growing up but in my city: west university place,tx there is a public school for elementary school that my nephew goes to and its a great school with mostly neighborhood kids. Lots of public schools in houston are complete trash I understand but they're also in dogshite areas. Are the public schools in good areas really that bad in louisiana? I know the high schools in houston bus kids from bad areas to the good areas but there's still IB programs and whatnot which is akin to a private school education.

Having gone to private schools my whole life, my parents arguments were its safer and to keep you away from the bad kids and drugs, lol those poor foreigner parents of mine, so naive, the rich kids i went to high school with were getting into all kinds of trouble and always knew they'd get out of it.They were the ones dealing all the drugs to the poorer kids at other schools. I would personally never waste a dime on private school for the education part, its worth it for the networking aspect, and that alone, the environment you're in is no better than public school except for your friends and their parents have more money which later on in life is valuable thats about it.

Look up librarian salaries on state government site or LSU Reveille site.
You need a Master of Library degree, but it is very possible to earn a lot. Average librarian salary nationwide is $55k.
Elementary school librarians don't make as much so they pull the figure down a bit.

In New Orleans? Yes

In Baton Rouge? Yes

In Lafayette? Depends on where you live, but I would most likely still send my kid to private school. The schools there aren't as shitty as NO and BR, though.

I can't speak to other parts of the state.

It's not that they are all that bad, it's that even the "good" ones that everyone brags about in La are just ok. Having a school where the average ACT score is 20, is just not some great place like so many want to claim. I get it, they are safe schools and if you really apply yourself and have parents pushing you, you can do great. That is not the norm though.

And yes, the networking and for us, the religious aspect adds to the appeal of private. Our classes are small and we are surrounded by outstanding people. The parents give their 100% best to volunteer and help with the school because it isn't like we have a bloated staff with tons of public paid servants to do stuff.

Haven't gotten to know great deal of the parents in my daughter's high school yet, but the grammar school just kicked arse. 95% of the kids come from 2 parent homes. Have met ER doctors, cardiologist, dental practice owners, law firm owners and so on. Great people to be around.

You can't budget for children - our first son was born with DS and over the past 13yrs we have had to make many financial "adjustments", we also have a typical 7yr old - we are family rich but that's the sacrifice you make when you decide to have kids - if you try to figure out the cost of a child and put it on paper, not only will you be way off but you probably wont ever have kids if you like having money...LOL

And this is the difference between wealthy people who think long term(big picture) and the rest of us.

They just pass wealth down from generation to generation by helping their kids and grand kids.

in NOLA and BR, yes

the rest of the state, the schools are not great, but they are good enough

I'm a firm believer that the kids home life and structure is way more important than the school

obviously, if you have the means, put your kid in whatever school you deem best, but if you live somewhere outside of NOLA/BR, I wouldn't put myself in a financial burden over private school

Lets break down the actual monthly cost here instead of everyone throwing out guesses:

Take home pay for 150k with 10% going to 401k and 200 a month going towards health insurance would be $8,000 a month
LINK

Two kids in private school will be $19,740 a year. That is assuming CHS and not something crazy like episcopal. So that comes out to $1,645 a month
LINK

Lets assume you have a nice 300k home. That gets you a nice home in BR, but nothing extravagant by any means. That will be about $2,000 a month note.

Cable bill- $125 a month
Cell phones- $400 a month
Grocery- $450 a month
Entergy- $100 a month
Water- $50 a month
Two moderate car notes at $300 each is $600 a month
That assumes you bought your high school aged kids cars with cash
Car insurance for 4 cars with teenagers $500 a month

So before any eating out or entertainment that leaves you $2,130 a month left over and that is using very conservative numbers. So yes, you have flexibility but you don’t have going to European vacation money every year by any means

I agree. But for those so so schools you mentioned, I just feel like even then your are screwing over your kid from having a fun high school experience. I would have no issue with sending my kids to Mandeville High, West Monroe, or other schools of the like. But for the in between schools like Covington etc etc, I would still feel like shite if I had the opportunity to afford private.

There are definitely unforeseen circumstances that you can't really take into account, but you should also have common sense and not have 5 kids if you make 100k and want to live in New Orleans while sending your kids to private school.

My dad sent me and my sister through private school. He made around $60k/yr. My mom might have made $20k. We went on at least 3 vacations a year, but my dad is the king of budget vacations.

I've got one at a catholic school and one in daycare about to be at the catholic school. It's about $7000 a year for school after all the fees and what not in Baton Rouge. But then if you have to send them to camps for the summer b/c you work and they aren't old enough to stay home, that's another $1,500 per kid at least. So you could say it's a good $9k per kid to go to private school for us here in BR.
What aggravates me is that i have to pay taxes to make the public schools better here, and then i can't deduct my private school tuition from my taxes. I think that is bull shite. Either let me deduct my tuition costs, or give me back the money i'm paying for the shitty public school i can't send my kid to. Give me back my CATS tax too since that stupid arse bus doesn't come anywhere near my house.

To say $150k a year isn't enough to send two kids to private school is just retarded. Our elementary school janitor sent all 5 of his kids through private school, with his stay at home wife. How much sacrificing you are wiling to make for your kids is up to you.

Lets assume you are 35. So when you were 10 in 1991 $80,000 that was the same as $141,000 today........ Just to give some perspective

I think people hear private school and just automatically assume they're all super expensive. Most of them are easily affordable for most middle class families willing to make some sacrifices. I know I was surprised when we priced some around here(Birmingham) out of curiosity. Even a couple of the more prestigious ones were a lot cheaper than I thought they'd be. A couple of them were criminally cheap, but they were of the Christian variety that are more focused on religion than education.
