The better question

How much do you spend monthly to make that happen

My biggest reward redemption will probably come up in 2015, as I'm planning a Thailand/Cambodia honeymoon for Dec., and as of now Starwood would cover about 6/7 nights already for hotels, and the plane tickets will probably be business one way, economy the other.

So, I've been looking at booking a Thailand/Sydney trip next year too. United points.
70k RT on Eva Air routing through Taiwan part biz/coach.

That will give you biz class seating all the way to BKK on EVA air,(their royal Laurel class is legit LINK)biz class on Thai Airways to SYD, and coach from SYD to MSY. Lot of value in that for 70k.

That's the thing about some of these rewards and cards. The fees have to be worth it. And for that, you have to spend enough. But at the same time, you don't want to adjust your spending just to get rewards or else you're getting played.

Nice, I got to check that out. What dates? Maybe I'll see you in BKK.

I budget every thing through Mint, and I was a 100% CC user anyways beforehand, so those things keep me in line.

Some people do get out of hand though.

That's unbelievable - what cards do you have that helped you make that happen?

Chase Freedom
Chase Sapphire Preferred (now downgraded to avoid fee)
Chase United (will cancel/apply for SW card to avoid fee and replace)
Chase Ink Bold
Chase Ink Plus (will downgrade to avoid fee)
Barclay's Arrival Plus

My fiancee also has:
Chase Freedom
Chase Sapphire Preferred (will downgrade to avoid fee)
Barclay's Arrival Plus (will downgrade)

Having an SO is HUGE.

The thing is, if you roll from one card to the next hitting signup bonuses it isn't all that hard.

I'm also getting married soon and therefore I had a plan to use these points. Not to mention kids won't be far off and I'll probably be taking less trips so I figured I'd get some out of the way.

Ya, I was about to check to see what I was doing wrong getting business class for twice that.

You thinking December 2015 by chance?

ETA: I'm seeing LAX to BKK via Taipei at 80k?? I'd love to get to Asia for 220k total instead of the 240k I keep getting with BIZ one way and ECON the other.

Ah yeah. I was pricing out a lot of options. Strictly in Asia I was actually flying back out through Tokyo.

MSY - BKK(Eva air flights through LAX/TPE) - Biz
BKK - NRT(Thai direct) - Biz
NRT - MSY - Econ
110k

You can use Air Asia throughout and just use BKK as your hub if you want to go elsewhere like Cambodia.

I think I'm actually looking to go in Feb.

Ah maybe its the NRT part. I've gotten better numbers via Japan before IIRC.

Ya, I had initially planned that but then I had some backtracking, so I figured out a route via Seoul to Siem Reap -> Kanchanaburi -> BKK -> Beaches -> Home

But we all know I'm basically going to do whatever the computer allows me to do.

Yep . I've spent an unfortunate amount of time trying different routing options.

I wasn't trying to knock anyone here specifically. But this is why it can't work as well for me. I just don't spend enough and I don't travel enough.

My biggest reward I can get is cash back, so I've stuck mostly with Discover since we've had it for so long and the limit is up to 15k on my card and 6k on my wife's which gives us plenty of cushion. I recently got the disney visa which had a good bonus since my dad already had it and could refer me. They put me at 17k limit on the spot. Plus, we go to disney world at least once every 3 years and I can use the bonus on my annual dues to DVC.

yall should jump on the new public United offer of 50k + 5. Great to use with Chase UR.

Got the email today and was coming here to ask if 50k is about the best offer I'll get with United miles? I have 25k after my trip to Europe a few weeks ago (which United was a disaster). I really hate UA, just not sure what I would do with 25k miles. But 75k miles and I'm sure I could do some good travel and just cancel the card next year. Make that over 80k as I will add my wife as an AU and the money spent to hit the bonus.

Chase UR points transfer into United. So 55k United points, transfer in 5x from Chase is RT Europe ticket for example.

Can you explain this a little more for me. The card is a United MilagePlus Explorer, so where do the Ultimate Rewards come in and what's this about 5x? Sorry, just want to get the absolute most value from United since I will hate flying them wherever I go

Yeah. It's the best bonus online I've seen on that card.

I think he meant to say transfer in 5k from UR to top off account to hit 60k for RT to Europe.

Nice. I lived in Thailand for 6 months in 2011. Where are you planning to go there? I met my now wife (she's from Europe) while in Phuket. We traveled all over AP. Maldives was our favorite place. We went to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh as well as Ho Chi Minh on one of our trips. Where are you headed in Cambodia? I assume Angkor Wat? Was awesome.

I have the SPG Amex as well, I think it's the best card for travel (air and hotel) rewards. Anyway, let me know where you're headed to in Thailand or if you want any recommendations

Ok, well then I'm gonna go ahead and get it then. I'll cancel it, but at least I'll feel like I'm getting something from United in return for their nickel and diming asses

So UR is another credit card then?

ETA: Never mind, I am looking at the UR site and see they have a few different cards, so you can use UR for travel, cash back, and other things. This would be my first and only Chase, so I guess mine would be simple, it's United miles I'm earning.

He's referring to Chase Freedom where you can earn 5x the points in rotating catergories. UR points can be directly converted to United Miles.

At least that's what I took from his post

Additionally you have a have a Chase preferred card to transfer the Freedom's UR points from as they are not as flexible to use as the CSP UR points. You don't get the 20% bonus through the UR portal using Freedom UR points and you cannot transfer the points out to an airline.

However, if you have a Freedom and a CSP (as an example) you can transfer the points from the Freedom to the CSP and gain the flexibility and bonuses.

Some of the people here manufacture spending to pay regular bills.

I run all of my personal expenses and business expenses through credit cards which are paid off monthly. There's nothing wrong at all with playing this game if you are responsible.

Don't have to spend a ton in most cases to take advantage of the signup bonuses. I bet you would travel more if you knew your flight was going to be free

I personally don't use any of the Chase cards because I only fly with Delta and unless I have missed something, Delta isn't a transfer partner with Chase UR.
