I've read on message boards that people have gotten them for spend on other Amex cards as well. My understanding is it's all about the spending

I don't work there, but my father does, he's been there I think 10 years now, I've been there a few times. It's pretty neat though how you can meet people on this board who are not very far away.

For a centurion card, I think the spending amex is looking for is about $250,000 a year?

Yes but you have to spend that for multiple years. However this is all speculation because it is "unknown"

I just got the Amex Platinum and asked about the black card for shits and giggles. The min is definitely $250k a year.

She said if you are close, and do it once, you may get an offer to upgrade.

For an initial fee of $7,500. No thanks!

Yeah, that is pretty cool. If you worked there I was going to say it was odd as I live in Nassau Bay and work in Sugar Land (Stafford actually) and you were the opposite.

My thoughts, exactly.

If anyone is interested, here is a link to the AMEX Platinum with no fee the first year. The tradeoff is you don't get the regular bonus.

I'm just posting this in case someone wants the card and it's benefits without the fee at least for one year. It says it is for Ameriprise clients, but any new application should work.

I would pass, stick with amexPR and see what they roll out in the near future.

I believe they will push down platinum benefits to PR holders and roll out a brand new platinum product that will be very enticing for the frequent traveler and big spender.

I just read through this whole thread from the beginning and it's a ton to take in. I just recently started using my Capital One Venture card and added my wife as an authorized user for everything other than mortgage and car note to start racking up the points. Add in the flyertalk and pointguy sites, I have some homework to do.

Get your wife her own card and get the signup bonus. Cancel hers in a year before the fee hits.

After reading this thread I figured that was the way to go. I thought a rule of thumb was to not close credit card accounts?

Get the balance down to $0 before you close the account and you'll be fine. If you have a high balance to limit ratio when you close it you will hurt yourself.

Gotcha. We don't have that problem. Looks like I need to get the Chase Sapphire preferred also. Main reward we want is airfare/hotels.

You can close the "churnable" cards. These are the ones you can close, wait a period of time, apply again, get intro bonus again...rinse, recycle, repeat. Generally unwise to close your oldest cards.

Keep in mind, some cards are not churnable as the bank may not allow multiple bonuses. Chase typically does this. Also, don't churn cards if you have a big purchase coming such as a mortgage or auto. You will take a ding to your credit report for the hard pulls on the credit apps.

By the way, the Southwest 50,000 point offer ends today for any one who needs that. You won't be able to book before they have their little devaluation, but what the hell.

Man, all these sites, information, and acronyms are insane. I don't think I have enough spending to do what alot of these people are doing. I never travel for work, just pleasure.

I'm thinking of getting the Saphire preferred and authorizing my wife. Can I also get a card for her and authorize myself for it to get the max bonus?

Most people don't. It's why people have figured out ways to manufacture spend to meet these minimum spend requirements.

You can both get the card and you can both authorize each other as users. But, you only need to keep one of the cards before so you aren't hit with 2 annual fee charges after the first year.

That's what I was thinking but I'm completely out of my element here. I always had the mentality of having as little debt as possible and I have been rethinking that as of late.
